I agree with goodyearchic I too have had my Mirena out for 3 weeks now and I would like to say to anyone doubting whether they should get theirs removed- go for it. I feel much much better, my spots have gone, my mood swings and craziness have disappeared and I feel fantastic. Whether it is psychological or not I don't know all I do know is that having the Mirena was one of the worst decisions of my life.

After 4 years with the Mirena IUD, I had mine removed yesterday. Got the Mirena in 2002, I was 34 years old and had a 2yr old and 3 year old. For the most part I forgot that it was there, I loved the convience of having birth control that I didn't have to think about. About a year into the IUD, I started having PMDD symptoms. I suffered with severe breast pain, lethargy, depression, mood swings. I charted these symptoms and my OB/GYN put me on an antidepressant to treat PMDD. Another disease, severe dry eye started after the Mirena also, which I treated with Restasis. It was not until I was 38 and ended up in a Hormone Specialist office that I was properly diagnosed with low progesterone. Mirena contains synthetic progestins, not bioidentical progesterone- there is a difference. I am now off antidepressants and Restasis and seeing if the synthetic progestins played a role making my natural progesterone so low. I am taking Micronized progesterone.
I urge any other woman who feels like her body has changed after getting Mirena to consider having it removed. Best case is that your mood swings or other symptoms could go away. If nothing changes get the Mirena again!! I am skeptical, but optimistic and will give you a true follow up on how I am doing in two weeks. I do not think it is psychological and there has got to be some relationship because so many more young women are on antidepressants than ever recorded. Listen to your body. By the way, my husband is a MD and he had no idea that the two could be related- and is now doing research.
