Kenalog Butt cheek, class action suit, better with time, dents, three months

Posted at 11:19 PM on Jan 31, 2008 by pcmorga, #26810

I to have a huge dent in my right butt cheek. I would be interested in a class action suit. This is ridiculous! It has been about three months since I received the shot. Has anyone noticed their dents getting better with time?

I had the Kenalog shot 7 months ago in my left butt cheek, which now has a dent too. My dent came on slow and seems to be getting worse. I'm not sure what to do, but I'm very upset.

What you are all describing is exactly what is happening to me.
It started out as a small dent in my buttocks, and now it is growing.
I would certainly love to join a class action lawsuit, this must be stopped, and information should be given as to the side effects before administering this injection.
Please let me know if anyone has contacted a lawyer.

Although the side-effect that you describe might have a different cause, it is most commonly caused by the improper administration of a Kenalog injection. I am attorney in Boise, Idaho. I am currently assisting a client with her claim for the improper administration of a Kenalog injection. If you would like additional information, please feel free to contact me. My name is Eric Swartz. I can be reached at eric@jonesandswartzlaw.com or by phone at (208) 489-8989.

You can fix the dents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am a nurse practitioner from Utah. I also had a golf ball sized dent that is now 90% improved. I found a study on line where they injected normal saline into the site. It's a simple procedure that any MD, PA or NP can perform. E-mail me if you have questions and I will be happy to give you more information that you can take to your doctor.

I too have a large dent in my upper right buttocks. I didn't even know what they were giving me. I thought it was a regular steroid shot. It must have been this medication. The last shot I had was in November of 07, I started noticing it in March of this year. It is not correcting itself. I would also like to take part in a class action lawsuit. You can email me at colbert_tori@yahoo.com

i got my shot in my right buttock over 6 months ago and the dent is unbelievable and embarrassing. My doctor told me NO side effects before she administered the shot. I dont normally get allergy shots, but i had tried everything else and i was miserable. not only did the shot not work to alleviate my allergies, my period was crazy irregular and there is a terrible, golf ball sized dent in my butt. im outraged about this and hope that there is some way to reverse the dent. any ideas??

My sister had this exact thing happen to her and the nurse who posted the saline shots is totally right. It took three doctors to find the one that knew that injecting the site with saline to clean off the crystals that eat at the flesh is the solution. Apparently most doctors have no idea what this is. It takes about 8 sessions, and once the crystals are wiped from the skin, then the body will begin to fill in the dent. No one ever mentioned this as a side effect and apparently happens when you tense up and the shot is improperly administered.

Everyone keeps asking about a class action lawsuit, but has anyone really heard about anyone starting one? I have the same dent in my butt and want to do something about it as much as the rest of you!

How would we even go about starting a class action suit up? If we can all get our heads together...let's do it!

I am English and was given this injection her on the NHS in June 08. Like every other patient on this page, I too have a large dent on my buttock. I am alarmed and very upset. It is huge and I, also am worried that it may get bigger. I have had injections in my feet also over the past four years (for Rheumatoid Arthritis), and increasingly it has become, for me, like walking on broken glass and fashion shoes are out of the question. I fear that the pads beneath my feet have been damaged too. As you say, this is a disgusting state of affairs as, at no time, was I warned of these horrendous side effects. I will post whatever discover now, as I am certainly going to find out why this has happened to me and what I can do about it!

I am so thankful that I am not the only one facing this horrible dent on my lower back above my buttocks. Please let's do something about this before it affects anyone else. It is ugly and makes me feel ugly. I will never put on another two piece bathing suite again. Please email me of what I can do to help.

My daughter also has a huge dent in her buttocks and she is a model/actress. This has caused her undue stress trying to stand where this is not noticeable when she has to wear a bikini. Can someone tell me where do you inject the site with Saline. I have called two dermatologists and they have not heard of this.

Thanks, Cindy Campbell

I have noticed an indent above my left butt and thought it was a normal indentation of the body. But all of sudden, today I realized how big it is and how it is only on one side. If I put both hands on my back, one side is different and It is extremely upsetting. My doctor has given me what I thought were shots of antibiotics a couple times over the last 1 - 2 years, but he is also old and shakey. Usually his wife/nurse helps, but atleast one time she didn't. Maybe he gave me the wrong shot, because my symptoms match what is being described here. It is the weekend, but I will give them a call anyway. Any more info on how to reverse the effects, please?

I noticed a couple of months ago that i had a huge dent in my left buttock......it really looks bad......i asked my Dr and he is gonna check into it. I did get a shot of kenalog and rocephin about Feb when I was sick......I'd really love to know if the kenalog is the reason and if it will always be like this. I was given a Kenalog shot for allergies about 3 months ago when my doctor insisted it was a quick and easy fix for the allergy season. It did not help my allergies. I was on my period for 32 days, and a dent appeared a month ago at the shot site. It is purplish in color, which seems to be fading slowly, but the dent remains. The doctor who administered this to me denies every having seen such side effects before. It is very frustrating that I wasn't informed about any side effects. If I had known even one of them, I wouldn't have ever considered Kenalog.

I am an RN and my wife had this done. She ended up with a large "dent" like most of you. This is caused by atrophy of the subcutaneous tissue (or in other words, it shrinks the fat under your skin). It is a little unsightly and she was not warned about it. It is frustrating, because it didn't even help with her allergies and now we have to deal with this disfigurement. We also were not warned about erratic menstrual periods, either.

We nurses attempt to prevent drugs from leaking into the subcutaneous tissue when we perform what is called a "Z track." See here:

http://www.nurseminerva.co.uk/images/ztrack.gif

As you can see in the picture, the nurse is supposed to pull the skin to the side before penetrating the skin. When this is done, the subcutaneous tissue makes a seal over the muscle tissue so that if the drug wants to leak out, it does not follow a straight line to the surface of the skin where the needle was inserted.

It has been over 6 months. She has gone and seen the doctor about it and they told her that it was permanent. They offered to fix it surgically for free. But it's hard to put yourself in their hands again with a bundle of new risks and no guarantee that the problem will be fixed.

I have developed a dent from a Kenalog shot given in May of this year. Does this get better on its own, or are the saline shots necessary to arrest the atrophy of the tissue? you can email me at elongercfa@att.net.

I was advised by my Dr. to get an allergy shot to help with my on going sinus issues. The first shot was great and cleared up my issues, 3 months later they were back.I went back in and they gave me another shot now i have huge dent in my upper arm where i received the shot. The dent is sore and horribly embarrasing. I went to back to the Dr. she said that it happened because I didn't have enough fat on my arm! I have since talked to another Dr. that said he would never have suggested the shot to begin with, but had no suggestions to fix the dent. Please tell me if there is a SAFE way to fix this and if there is a lawsuit to join in on, this is frustrating to know that Dr.s are not making us aware. LIFEWITHKIDS@YAHOO>COM

Thank goodness i'm not the only one! I had the Kenalog injection in may/june 09 and by November 09 i had a dent on the righthand side of my lower back / buttocks! Its growing and looks scarred! After visiting my Doctor she referred me to see a Dermatologist @ the hospital. I have the appointment next week and if she confirms that is it due to the Kenalog injection then i will be contacting a Lawyer as I was never informed of these side effects! Unlike everyone else though, the shot did clear up my bad hayfever and skin allergy!

Has the lawsuit been implemented? I would love to be a part of it. Also, has anyone had any success in fixing the dent with either saline injections or another method?

Hi my name is Cindy I got my first dent on my right side of my buttocks eight years ago. The dent got 1 inch deep and 1 inch wide and very painful.
I had to have surgery to repair it but it was to damaged now i have pain all the time. I had to get a shot for a bad migraine the other day while she was giving me the shot it was burning. I have been in pain since and now I see another dent starting. I have been to so many doctors and know one knows what it is or why this is happening. I am in so much pain all the time it hurts to sit walk bend over. I'm so tired of it I wished I could find a doctor that could help me.

That's a side effect of some intramuscular injections. How can you sue for a known side effect of that drug? It's up to the consumer to research anything that's being put in your body.

That is rather harsh !! The thing is the side effects are not known. I didnt know and it seems that nearly eneryone who has posted on this site did not know. We trust our doctors to warn us and inform of potential side effects of an injection and unfortunately in most cases we are not.

Wow, i don't know about you, but if we never had internet, I guess we would never know anything. We shouldn't take all information and lack of knowledge for granite, right medrn? In fact, we wouldn't even be reading about how everyone has this similar side effect if it weren't for the internet. If I'm a teen or young adult and it's not a Rx that I can pick up at the pharmacy that gives me a pamphlet with the known side effects, then it's expected from the doctor to have the knowledge and expertise to inform their patient. After all, you get paid enough to know, right? Very interesting. I've got a good story for everyone on this page. I've been getting the kenalog shot since I was 14yrs old. I'm now 26 and have gotten it twice a year, every 6 months. Some years I had no medical insurance so only went in the fall when my allergies are the worst. So 2shots a yr X 12yrs means I've gotten the injection probably about 20 times in my life. Hate to think what my back will look like in another 10yrs. The kenalog has most certainly helped my allergies and am grateful for that; however I've had this interesting decrease in my skin (like a dent) on my lower right back, near where the injection goes in. Can't say it's the same spot in which the injection was inserted though. I noticed the 'dent' a few years ago... it was barely there, I'd just thought I had dimples in my back or something. Then it got larger and light purplish/pink in color with some hair growth. I asked my gynecologist and she had never seen anything like it, but advised to see a dermatologist. I saw a dermatologist in March 2010, she said she saw the problem in children, never adults. She didn't say what it was pretty much because she didn't know. She just said that the fat was all gone, which is probably why I bled so much when she took a biopsy. So, she took a biopsy and the results came back stating there was extensive hemorrhage within the subcutaneous tissue, possibly due to trauma. Just about a few wks later, it's spring, my allergies are horrendous and I get my next shot. I remember thinking as she gave the shot to me 'Hmm, I wonder... could just be a coincidence.' I just went to the beach less than 2wks ago and I noticed a few days ago in the shower that there is another 'dent' just a little lower from the other, but it wasn't there 2wks ago and the dent is almost the size of the other and again, has a bit of hair growth, but don't see a color change. So, I have 2 'dents' now, not 1. I plan to contact all 3 doctors, the 2 that gave it to me (in the same office) for the past 12yrs and the dermatologist. I'd recommend filling out a complaint with the FDA.

I'm really surprised to see so much about this. My "dent" from an allergy shot lasted for almost a year. It was painful to the touch (like a sore muscle). It's now gone. If "pcmorga" is correct (see above comments), then it just "ate" the fatty tissue in my bottom?! Well, either I now have more to fill it in, or my vigorous exercise routine I took part in made it smooth out. It looks like normal now.

I have been getting depromedral shots every 8 weeks for the past several years for relief from my RA. I noticed a dent in 1 side above my butt which grew to be as long as my hand. Then I noticed the same thing happening on the other side. I never dreamed it could be a side effect of those injections! I had an "extended" tummy tuck 2 years ago, the dents were gone. I have just noticed a new golf ball sized dent on my right side, and it is where the nurse gives me the injection. Thru the years I've been getting these injections I always relax that muscle, and I've never noticed the nurse tightening the skin, she just jabs the needle in. I do have a good exercise regime, but the dent continues. It is not painful as others have mentioned. However the skin has a different texture, looks like scarring & light bruising. Now unlike others, I am not self conscious about it & it does not stop me from wearing a bikini. I'm just so glad to know what is causing this! I definitely do NOT want to go thru more cosmetic surgery!
1 poster mentioned that the denting is a known side effect of the steroids. My Doctor only mentioned side effects of long term usage such as moon face.

I just happened to google "dent in my butt" thinking nothing would come up, and was shocked to find this website and realize that I, too had a Kenalog shot about 4 months ago. My symptoms are exactly what everyone else describes--a dent, or "hole" in my right buttocks. It feels like fat or muscle has separated. Has anyone had any success getting rid of it?

I also have the dent right above my left butt cheek. I received the kenalog shot in Sept of 2009 for extreme poison ivy and had no issues with it. I had even worse poison ivy again in May of this year and received 2 Kenalog shots about a month apart. When the nurse was administering the 2nd one I remember thinking to myself it was odd she gave it to me above my butt instead of on my butt. In July I noticed the dent. I went to the Dr today and he said it is VERY rare for atrophy at the site of a Kenalog shot. He obviously has no idea what he's talking about, b/c there are hundreds of websites like these mentioning the issue. He also did NOT tell me any of the side effects of it. I myself had to ask him what the shot was even called. I had horribly poison ivy so I was desperate for relief, and it was the only thing that cleared it up in Sept 09, so that's why I got it again. I'm extremely worried that the dent will get larger. I'm going to research the saline shots but I'm going to a plastic surgeon at St Johns first to see if they know anything about the saline. I know people keep saying "message me if you know how to fix it or if you know of a lawsuit" but if someone does know any info on either, please just say so on this message board so that everyone can see it. We're all concerned, we all want the info so please, if you have any, share it.

This past February, I had an allergic reaction which was addressed with a steroid shot. After a while the dent appeared and the skin over the dent is whitish. Im very pissed off to say the least. 6 months later its still there... I cant tell you if its getting better. I dont think its getting worse but it is an obvious mark.

UPDATE! I have been doing hours of research on this. If you check acne websites, steroids are often injected into cysts. Many of the patients experience dents in their face for up to a year. But the replies I read, did say they got better and/or filled up.

Another online source stated that it cant take anywhere from 12 to 30 months for them to even out. Everyone positing here seems to be in the throws of this experience. I dont know if anyone here has waited over a year to see if its better.

Various words I used to look these things up included Necrosis or atrophy at injection site. Dent after injection. Dent after cortison. Lipoatrophy etc. etc. Apparently this is more common then whats actually stated by doctors or dermatologists.

I received a similar shot this past April, and I recently had a appt. with my doctor because I had developed a large dent as well. It is located on lower right side of my back/upper right buttcheek. It's called Fat Atrophy. My Doctor actually admitted that it happened because the injection was administered improperly. It went into my soft tissue instead of into the muscle. He said that he has seen it one other time, and it corrected itself after a year. He apologized many times, and offered to refer me to a plastic surgeon. If my insurance doesn't cover it, he said he will help pay for treatment...we'll see if this happens. The plastic surgeon said it will require liposuction in another area such as the abdomen, and an injection of the fat into the dent. He said it is best done as an operating room procedure with anesthesia. He seemed to be very defensive of the other doctor, and he told me that this can just happen, and it doesn't matter how it's administered. He basically said it's a weird reaction by body had. (even though I've received the shot before with no problem) When I asked what causes it then, he said "hundreds of denominators." Wow, very clear, thanks. So now I am totally confused, however, I am hopeful to learn it can fixed! Also, I have hypo-pigmentation, or a lightening of the skin in that area, and he said that that can be corrected with a skin tattoo. He said darker skin shades are easier to match. Oh, and I forgot to mention the liposuction treatment may have to be done twice. The Plastic Surgeon took photos of the area and sent it to me insurance company to see if they will cover it. We are waiting to hear back. I hope this helps someone!
