I took Yasmin for 2 years and about 6 months after starting Yasmi...

I took Yasmin for 2 years and about 6 months after starting Yasmin I started getting migraines at least 3 x per week and sometimes 5 x per week (before not even really getting many normal headaches). I thought it might be my birth control and saw my OB who referred me to a Neurologist who put me on a medicine for migraines. About another 5 months later I noticed I had a small bald spot in my hair line. Saw a Dermatologist who diagnosed it is alopecia. I immediately stopped Yasmin and migraine meds and decided to get an IUD (GREAT CHOICE!) My migraines stopped almost immediately, however my hair loss continues to progress. I now have 3 additionally bald spots on my head and areas on my scalp that are very thin. I feel great otherwise, no headaches, no depression (other than losing my hair), no anxiety, appetite is normal. I'm so desperate to find someone else that has had this specific problem as no one believes the hair loss is connected to Yasmin. I just pray after awhile the hair will grow back. Please if anyone has experienced this same situation please post what might have helped you get through it and if it does ease up! One more thing - I have scalp pain, like burning on the front and top and back part of my scalp, wide spread, not only in the bald areas.

Hi lacygirl,
i took yasmin 5 years. within the last year my hair really started to shed.
first just the front hairline, then just thin all over.
and i know the burning sensation.
I started useing a dilution of Braggs natural organic apple cider vinegar.
about 1 tbsp t 1cup of water. rinse your hair with it, massage in a little, then rinse out.

It is soothing to the scalp and a good conditioner for the scalp.
Morrocco method shampoos also helped with this sensation, I don't have it anymore, but i know it is the same as what you mention. it is very bothersome and doctors just dismissed it as nothing.
kathy:)

Hi Kathy, Thank you so much for your post. I went right out and bought the vinegar and used it that evening. Can you tell me how long your burning pain lasted and if you have seen any regrowth in your hair? My pain has lasted since October but has eased up in the front and is now mostly towards the back. I do have times during the day it doesn't hurt, so it hasn't been constant so I do feel as if it is getting better. I'm just worried about my hair coming back in. Thank you so much, it just feels better knowing I'm not losing my mind.

Lacygirl,

I too was on Yasmin for about 3 1/2 years and around the last year and a half I started to notice my hair completely thinning. I used to have long THICK hair, and now, it's not. I went from doctor to doctor, got blood tests, hair samples, and everything comes back normal, so the doctor dismisses it and tells me to take biotin pills. The only thing those did was make my nails stronger. I switched bc to yaz 4 months ago (I absolutely hate it) but I still haven't seen any improvement with my hair. I'm going to try that vinegar solution. My mom suggested rosemary oil and jojoba oil. Not sure if that works either, but at this point I"m willing to try! Good luck to you and throw any suggestions you have my way :)

Hi Malissa0218,
My husband agrees with you in regards to the class action suit. I do know that my dermatologist has a patient that experienced the same level of hair loss as you have experienced. I'm not sure of the time frame but I do know that all of her hair is growing back in nicely. She is using a shampoo kit (that I started using after hearing about her success) called Nioxin. She uses kit #2 and nothing else, not rogaine, or any other product. I've also been told by my Dr. that our hair begins to go through the phasing process of falling out (when interruppted by something like Yasmin or Yaz) before we realize it and will eventually get past the interruption and regrow if the follicle isn't scarred.
We have an attorney that works for our company that has done class action suits before. If I talk to him I will keep your email and notify you. Hang in there - I know its hard but you really acted quickly and I'm certain it will regrow. My spots are small and I can cover them up with other hair (not completely but somewhat) but I continue to get more spots so I know eventually at this rate I won't be able to cover it up, so I understand the stress. Plus I do public speaking for my company, not something I'm happy about at the moment!

In response to your effects on your headaches, hairloss and YASMIN. As I read your symptoms, I understand your pain. I too have been taking Yasmin, and have been having almost the same exact side effects and symptoms. I've been on yasmin for a few years, and went to a neurologist who proscribed TOPAMAX. I noticed my hair loss for the last 6 months. I've been reading up on info. and I now believe my migranes and hairloss are due to Yasmin! I also believe that my lack of desire to have sex or my ability to get wet is because of Yasmin. This is a very personal thing and I wanted you to know that you are not alone.I am only 34 years old and I know how embarassing all this can be. I reccomend blood tests, perhaps getting an IUD, and checking out hair loss preventions like rogaine. As I will have to do the same. Good luck and keep your chin up.

Dear friend,

I know how depressed and worried you must feel because I have experienced period loss over time, irregular cycles and hair loss too. They are all frightening but the hair loss is the most fearsome of all the symptoms.

I am not a doctor but I have researched and read quite a bit and I am still learning on the topic. Firstly while you may feel helpless because doctors might be quick to pass judgment, you need to be aware of what is going on in your body so you can best address it, by as natural a method as possible. Nature is a great pharmacy.

Seven years ago my doctor insisted that my hair started to thin out and develop bald patches due to stress. I knew there was something else involved so I pushed for further tests. I discovered that I have a disorder called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. I was very scared but you must always as a person be sure that there are thousands of people out there, if not millions, going through exactly the same thing. Together we can fight whatever it is.

So first you need to know if you have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) or an overactive or underactive thyroid. Any condition that affects the chemicals in your body will affect many areas. Secondly, if you do have PCOS, you need to alter your diet to minimize effects like irregular periods, amenorrhea and hair loss. It isn’t too difficult, trust me. Reducing sugar intake as much as you can, improving nutrition via consumption of greens, vegetables, fruit, nuts, fibre and omega 3s as well as other essential fatty acids are all important. Exercise, plenty of water intake and multivitamins are necessary for a balanced diet which in turn affects your hormones and your hair.

Massage your scalp daily and gently in circular motions for a couple of minutes. If your hair is oily you must wash it regularly because the build up of oils does not help the androgens responsible for hair loss in women with PCOS. Also before washing your hair you can use olive oil to massage the scalp and leave it for about an hour before having your shower/bath.

Avoid processed foods and toxins because they make things worse and don’t help your health. Smoking affects the amount of metals in your body which ultimately means hair loss. Finally whatever you do, DON’T use hot tap water to drink or cook with because it contains high levels of lead which is toxic and can lead to hair loss. I found out a lot of these things just today from information posted by doctors.

Until today, I did many actions that contradicted what I write here. Thus my hair situation became aggravated over time. In recent months I cut down on white wheat products (pasta, flour etc) and white rice too as well as starchy foods (all simple carbs basically to sum things up). I dropped some weight and my periods became clock work for the first time in my life. Even when I was slimmer than now in my younger years, my cycles weren’t as regular as they have been for the last three months. Since October 2006 they used to occur every 4 months! So see diet definitely affects chemicals in your body.

As I say you must find out the state of your health, what vitamins and essentials you lack in so you can address the issue. Lack of protein and iron can lead to hair loss too.

I hope what I say has been of some help to you and many other people. I feel your anxiety and worry. I am there too. If like me you’ve been silly and used hot tap water for consumption, garlic apparently is very helpful in removing lead (and mercury) from your system.

If you’re overweight, this also can result to imbalanced hormones and hair loss so you will need to take it easy and not stress and start making your meals smaller so you can slowly bring the weight down. Remember: drink plenty water. Try to cut out soft drinks from your practice. Unhealthy foods must go and do a bit of exercise like cycling, swimming, aerobics or walking. You will see a definite improvement within months. Never go on drastic diets or starve yourself. This can lead to severe hair loss. A balanced life style is necessary. I once went on an eating plan that involved a whole week of a particular vegetable soup. My hair loss first became evident after this stupid practice. Smaller meals in more regular bursts are better than three massive ones because your metabolism boosts up.

I read somewhere that camphor is to be used as treatment for hair loss. Never resort to camphor. In the world of natural medicine camphor spells disaster for your health as does chlorine (bleach and anything else with chlorine)!

I’ve read that with PCOS complete baldness is not the norm and that the hair follicles are still alive after hair loss occurs so there is hope. Also new hairs grow every day. If all I describe doesn’t help, you might want to look into a scalp treatment called Rogaine. This external use product must be used indefinitely from what I have read or hair loss will begin again. Plus the product is not suitable for everybody so you must be careful. But first isolate what is causing your problems. It is important so then you know what to do next.

Good luck and be sure you can change things if you think positively and don’t give up. Most importantly remember to check all advice you receive before you apply it because it might have side effects. Also please know you’re not alone.

Best wishes,

A Friend In Your Time Of Need.
