My mother was put on Prednisone 3 weeks ago because of severe muscle pain (15 mg at first and increased to 60 mg). After she starting taking it she began to have weakness in her muscles/joints and was unable to walk by the end of the week. She also had severe water retention and could not catch her breath. Most of all she was very weak all the time and could not seem to sleep at all. She wound up in the hospital and was classified with a type of Congestive Heart Failure due to the excessive dosage given by a pain doctor. She had to be admitted to a Rehabilitation Center where they have now cut her down to 10 mg a day and she is trying to take Physical Therapy to walk again. She is fighting with depression and overwhelming feelings of anxiety. She still cannot sleep and wonders if she will ever by back to normal again. Just a month ago she was living a normal life and because of the pain, was given this medication. I wonder if the benefits outweigh the horrible side effects she has experienced. After reading some of the responses above I see others are having similar side effects. Any encouragement from someone with a positive long term outcome would be beneficial at this time to her. She feels very helpless in her situation.

My mother was taken to the hospital because she was having problems breathing. The hospital kept her for 4 days. They determined that she has COPD. We are actually in the process of getting another opinion. My mother had prednisone given to her intravenously. When she came back home from the hospital she was a totally different person. She has unpredictable sleeping patterns, itchiness all over, and is acting extremely paranoid. She was perfectly fine before staying at the hospital. Its not constant...she has these episodes....they come and go. She's also become depressed ever since taking this medicine. Her side-effects are so bad that I actually left my job and my life in NYC to move back to Florida to care for her. My father couldn't do it on his own and I was just worried sick....He works two jobs and just can't afford to stay home with her full-time.... I know that me being here has made her feel a lot better. I started her on Electrolyte drinks such as Gatorade's G2. I also started her on B-12 supplements as I was told it might help.....I have seen a difference ever since starting her on this. She was also really dizzy prior to me giving her the vitamins. So dizzy that she couldn't do normal things. The dizziness has definitely subsided. I would suggest the B-12 supplements and for you to continue being there for her.

Hi. Even though supplementing the B12 might be helpful, there is much more your mother could take to eliminate Prednisone's numerous side-effects. Try to avoid, or greatly reduce grains and sugar intake, fruits, juices, breads, “junk food,” pasta, cereal, potatoes, honey, maple syrup, fructose, and other refined carbohydrates. Consider supplementing with 5g/day of the powdered L-Glutamine for about 3-4 months and high-quality probiotics such as PB-8 from Nutrition Now. In addition, supplement with high-quality, professional-strength (not-a-day) multi-vitamin complex -- Nutrient 950 fr. the Pure Encapsulations is an excellent formula. Add 2 teaspoons of liquid Cod Liver Oil -- it is going to help to reduce pain in joints, it is also good for an overal well-being. Be healthy, and if at all possible, try to stay away from Prednisone and other corticosteroids.
