I was also recently diagnosed with Hypo. with a TSH of 7. The PCP ordered a 75mcg starting dose even though I told him I was very sensitive to even small doses of all meds. He scoffed and told me Synthorid is like a vitamin-something the body makes naturally. I should have trusted my knowledge of my own body, but went through a lot of awful side effects before my dose was decreased. As a nurse for 30 years, I know that for many people the best advice is to Start Low and Go Slow. I am now on a much lower dose with fewer side effects, but I am not sure if it is helping my hypothyroidism. I will have a TSH drawn in the near future to see. I guess what I am saying is before trying a new med-give the one you are on an adequate trial at a lower dose. It is better to change one thing at a time-such as the dose. Also from doing a lot of reading on Hypo and reading lots of peoples comments, this is not a simple disease and feeling better is not a simple process. I wish you the best in feeling better soon! J.K.
Hi. First I want to say that starting you on .50mg, is too much. The smallest dose is .25mg and some people even have to start at half of that. (I guess they cut the pills). Your body isn't making enough thyroxine, so all of a sudden adding all the amount (.50) you were taking is like overload for the body. Your body probably went into shock and couldn't utilize it all. Moving up to .125 is unbelievable. I would find an endocrinologist to help you because I don't think your primary care dr knows what he is doing. Joank 22's answer is great. Start slowly, increase slowly. I want to add, that it doesn't take a lot of medicine to see changes. If you are feeling awful, ask you doctor (or see a new one), to move it up to the next dose. Keep doing the blood tests and keep moving up slowly. You will know when you are getting close to "your dose" because you symptoms will seem to lessen. When you are feeling more normal, but still not completly better, start to become very cautious about how you move up with the medicine. There is a fine line between hypo and hyper. You would always rather be under than over. Good luck!
