I'm a 22 year old who was diagnosed with dermatologists a couple months ago. I've been on different doses of steroids ranging from 5mg to 60mg for 5 months now. i was on 60mg the longest and just went down to 40mg. i go down to 30 mg next month. so far my side effects are moon face, swollen areas around my neck and collar bone, weight gain like 15 lbs, always have to wake up in the middle of the night and pee, my knees get shooting pains sometimes at night, light hair by my ears like sideburns, tired, helps with my muscle weakness a little, my eyesight seems blurry sometimes, chest always feels tight. I'm also on Methotrexate, Bactrim, folic acid, and Fosamax. it might be a reaction form all these but i think its mainly from the Prednisone. i cant wait to get down to the lower doses. i look like a different person and even tho all my family and friends know its still embarrassing. i fell like a whole different person. i cant wait to be normal again.

I hear your pain......I have been on Prenisone for 5 months and I was on 70 mg. and they got me down to 40 and then I had to be bumped back up to 60mg. due to my eye still has some swelling. I was diagnosed with VKH a serious and rare eye disorder which requires long term use of prednisone to try to save my sight. I will be on it for at least another 4 months and I hate it!!! I have gotten like you, the moon face, I also gained 15 pounds and a horrible temper to go with it. I have been depressed and it has taken a toll on my marriage I think. It almost makes it not worth it to continue to take but I know I have to. As far as how long all these horrible side effects stay after you stop taking it, I am not sure but I will talk to my doc and ask him on my next appointment and I will let you know. Until then take care and know there are lots of us out there that do understand what you are going through..

I have been on prednisone for almost three years. I started out with 60mg. I trying to wean off the 5mg that I have been on for 2 years. Very difficult. However, I have always balance with supplements that build the auto immune, since prednisone suppresses it. It's all about balance. Very important. It has made a huge difference, even now. My attitude has always been good. I did gain the weight. 30lbs. That's hard to lose. But the benifits out weigh the side-effects. I have to attribute my faith. Although we may not always understand why we become ill, God has it's purpose. It has actually been good for me. So I hope this posting lends encouragement to who ever reads this. Attitute is 75%. If you are a believer in Christ, know He will take the burden. God bless all who comes in contact with this blog.

I know exactly how you feel! This medicine SUCKS!!!! But like you it a must. For me it's asthma. So I either take the meds and deal with he side effects or stop breathing. It was kind of a no brainer. I wish I had some great words of advice but honestly I am currently struggling with all the side effects myself. I have recently (as of a few days ago) stopped the medication but the aftermath has yet to diminish. Until now I have always been able to keep my asthma under somewhat control. This is the first time I had to take it. The weight gain is a killer but like the others have said remember that your family loves you no matter what. Put on a cute little pouty face and get yourself a new pair of jeans out of the deal! A new pair of jeans always make a girl feel GREAT!!!
