I've also experienced many of the same side effects. I was on NuvaRing for 3 years and on the pill for 5 years before that. For me I found the changes very subtle. My sex drive was not effected right away, but it just kept getting lower and lower. I was doing grad school so I was getting more and more stressed and thought that that had something to do with it, so I ignored it. I was also much more anxious, depressed, short tempered, unmotivated, fatigued and oh, did I mention depressed! I honestly thought it was all due to the stress I was experiencing in grad school, but I did feel like something may be up. A lot of my symptoms were similar to hypothyroidism (oh yeah, I also gained 30 lbs after switching from the pill to NuvaRing) so I got tested, but my thyroid was fine. I had heard about the increased risk of blood clots for the patch, so I wanted to find out if the risk was also heightened for NuvaRing, so I googled a bit and came across some other sites like this one and saw how similar other peoples situations were to mine. I went off it 3 weeks ago (after only having a new ring in for one week) and I got a really long and heavy period right away. Since then I've been having mild cramps until today where they are the worst I've ever had. On the bright side, everyone has noticed how much happier I am - I really feel like my old self again. I haven't been depressed or stressed since I've been off NuvaRing!! It's so awesome. We've switched to non-hormonal contraceptive methods - I wanted to give my body a break and I may be trying for babies in the next year. Anyway - for those of you considering going off - TRY IT!! It can't hurt (except maybe for some cramping :D) If you don't start to feel better you can always go back on. It has made a huge difference in my life. I too was considering suicide at 26 when I'm normally a really happy person. My mom has also noticed that my moods are much more stable - apparently I was going a bit bipolar before!

I was put on the nuvaring after having adverse side affects with a few oral forms of birth control and also the patch, which included weight gain, nausea, depression and migraines. I was originally put on bc because I had extremely painful periods as a young girl at the age of 15. Iwas diagnosed with endometriosis in my early twenties and told that I had to continue taking birth control to control the endometriosis. I stopped taking bc completely after being on the patch for about 3 months, which was the worst side effects I had ever experienced. At that point I had been on birth control for seven years and decided that my body needed a break. At the time I was engaged and my fiancee wanted to have a baby, so we tried for months to get pregnant and failed! I was only 23! I should have been able to conceive. It inevitably led to the end of my relationship. Since then I have had problem after problem, abnormal bleeding etc. After refusing to go back on bc for years my doctor finally convinced me to try to nuva ring as a "solution" to the problems I have been going through. She told me to keep the ring in for the entire month, not taking a break for my period. In the first month I felt great, the massive pms symptoms I was constantly dealing with seemed to disappear, and I was even losing weight. By the end of my second month, all of that started to change. I was experiencing anxiety, depression and severe mood swings. I also started spotting heavily which went on for weeks! Then with the ring still in I got a full on period with more severe cramps and heavy bleeding than I've ever experienced. I figured there must have been something wrong with that particular ring so I went to the pharmacy to pick up a new one and replaced it. The blood slowed down but only back to the heavy spotting. I decided to call my doctor to discuss discontinuing the ring. She told me that my uturus was just trying to thin itself out and that I should take it out for 4 days and let the bleeding stop then put it back in. Taking her advise, on the third day I got another full on period, where I bled through 16 maxi pads in 24 hours! I called her back, and she still refused to see me. Feel like what was happening to me was completely abnormal I followed my instinct and went to the er where I got the worst care i could ever imagine, and the only thing they told me was that i should follow up with my doctor the next day. I am totally confused and conflicted about what to do now. What is the point of being on birth control if it does nothing for me and I have no sex drive anyway?

Wow, almost my story to a "T!" My husband and I would like to begin trying in the next year or so, and I just took mine out tonight (after beginning it two days ago.) I really believe it has been behind my cramps, moodiness, lack of sex drive, HUGE weight gain, etc. Good luck to you!
