I have a 8 year old daughter that has been on Singulair since she was 2 years old. When she first started Singulair, she was also put on Flovent (an inhaled steroid), along with Albuterol for what the doctors call reactive airway disease (similar to asthma). Her triggers were allergies and having a cold. Her first flare up of mood swings alerted me to take my daughter off the Flovent. She seemed to improve a little, but still had behavior/moody issues. I had chalked them up to the "terrible twos", and not really thought much of it. As time went on, I became accustomed to the behavior that my daughter was showing. When the few complaints of stomach pains, headaches, and leg pain came along, I managed to explain them away with reasonable explanations (example: growing pains, eating too much, not enough sleep, etc.). As my daughter went off to school, I heard numerous complaints from her teachers that she lacks focus, cannot complete a task in a timely manner, easily gets distracted, and at times (more than not) is a disruption to the class. At home, I noticed a strange "tick" going on with her blinking, the constant need to repeat herself, and the battles with bursts of crying to get her to do ANYTHING. SOMETHING IS REALLY WRONG!!! I was on the edge of having a full work-up of mental tests. I have her see the school social worker weekly and I keep a constant communication with her teacher regarding her behavior. I decided to look up side effects regarding this medication. I first looked at the website for the manufacturer and saw nothing alarming, nothing about behavior affected side effects. I looked into mental disabilities (autism, aspergers, ADD, ADHD, etc.) and saw no common link to her behavior. Then I came to this site and MY JAW DROPPED!! Everything that my daughter has experienced, TO THE LETTER, has been experienced by other children. The weight gain, the occasional pains, the strange behavior. I decided that NOW is the time to act. I have seen my daughter's doctor and discussed my concerns. We are going to wean her off this stuff starting TODAY! Fear of a serious relapse of breathing problems is making us very cautious. I am kicking myself for not making the connection sooner. Wish us luck that this drug has not destroyed her chances of getting better and that this "asthma" can be controlled another way without such serious side effects.

your are not alone...i hope you are able to get her off singulair without problems with her asthma. you will be amazed at her recovery. it took a full 10 days for my son's recovery from singulair. after which, he was like a different child.

my son was on singulair 3+ years. his most significant side effects were: irritability, FEAR, self-doubt, sick stomach / out-of-nowhere vomiting, leg pains, quick to tears, nightmares, restlessness, impulsiveness, difficult focusing / comprehension. towards the end of his use, he was on a higher dose ( 5mg). this added side effects of hallucinations, facial tic, extreme of everything listed above. it was horrible but i am thankful for the higher dose or i would have never made the connection.

doctors and parents do not realize what this drug is doing to some children. merck and the fda turn a deaf ear to the complaints. i think they are keeping doctors in the dark, so the prescriptions keep flowing.

good luck to you. i hope you are able to get her off singulair soon. i am sooo thankful for the site. her little life is going to get so much better. you will find your sunny, happy little girl again. :)

you can read my postings under Advair as my son was having horrible side effects with Advair and also was put initially on singulair and he is only four . I am under worriedasthmamom1 and have sinced had a very long talk with my sons asthma allergist to take him off the Advair and the singulair and put him on Asmanex . He is now on Asmanex 220 mcg once in the evenings and only takes his albuterol when he is coughing bad which he hasnt had to take in a long while. The FDA has approved an Asmanex twisthaler 110 mcg for release later this month in February 2008 for children ages 4 - 11 and the 220 mcg is normally given to patients 12 and older. I must tell you that on the day we were weaning my son off the Advair he was throwing fits like you describe of your daughter, and my son was having night sweats and he was also super hype and wouldnt sit still at any time. We switched right over to Asmanex. My son is sleeping through the night all night and is breathing so deeply and soundly for the first time in a month . HIs breathing is normal and I no longer fear he might die in the middle of the night from all the whole body tremors he was having with the advair. PLease know when my son started having such horrible symptoms with his advair , I got on the internet and searched for the answers myself. On February 14, 2008 I stayed up all night till 4:30 am to find answers and safer ways for my son to breath. There is also another medicine I came acros which I will share with you and which I plan on putting my son on in addition to his Asmanex as the medicine is all natural herbs to relieve asthma symptoms. Look up respitrol on the web and read about it as I found it wonderful and a relief to us parents of asthma children . I also had to convince my sons allergist and asthma specialist that I did not want Advair for my son anymorebut wanted Advair . He still tried to say Advair was safe but after all my son experienced I was really afraid of it.After an hour or so my sons doctor changed my sons prescription to Asmanex 220 mcg once daily . I see no side effects thus far and like I said he is sleeping so well for the first time in four weeks ......yeah.
