This is the 3rd time I have been on Wellbutrin. Once in 1999, then in 2004, and just started taking it again 3 months ago. The first two times I took it I had joint pain and a lot of muscle inflammation. This go around is different... Just recently, within the past few weeks, I started breaking out with hives, after taking it with no problems for three months! Started on my head and progressively got worse. I break out all over my body, head, legs, back, hands, etc. For some reason it seems to happen more frequently when I lay down in my bed to go to sleep (weird!) One other scary side affect is, I frequently stop breathing when I start to fall asleep, and wake up gasping for air. Has anyone else experienced this? Since I had never experienced problems with hives the first few times I was on Wellbutrin, I didn't think it was the medication causing the hives. So, I cut my dose in half (50mg/day). The hives didn't go away, so I stopped taking it all together 3 days ago, but still continue to get hives. Does anyone know how long it takes to get it out of your system?

I don't know much about Wellbutrin, but the symptoms that you described of not breathing & then waking up gasping for air are those of Sleep Apnea. The soft pallet in the back of the throat collapses & temporarilly closes the air passage ways until your body wakes you up gasping for breath. You may find that your heart is racing or pounding too. There are 2 types of sleep apnea that I'm familiar with, one of which is caused by gaining weight. The other is central apnea which is not weight related. If you have sleep apnea you are probably waking up very tired the next morning - and are wondering why you feel so exhausted even when you thought you had a good night sleep. Consistant lack of sleep can cause all sorts of issues - including mental issues.

Sounds like you are allergic. I had this reaction with Lexapro after I was on it for a couple of weeks. You might have built up an intolerance to it. I would call you Dr today and ask about discontinuing and starting something else.
My hives lasted for a week or more after I stopped taking it. It did take awhile, maybe even two weeks. I also had weird breathing problems on Lexapro. Lots of sighing. It didn't feel right. If you didn't have the breathing problems before going on Wellbutrin, I would say it could definitely be related. I am actually on Wellbutrin now, and doing much better. Again, call your Dr.

I have been on Wellbutrin XL 300mg/day. I thought I was losing my mind. I too, broke out in hives, all over, felt flush. Then I would get pains in my arms and chest, so it would make me paranoid to the point I would feel like I was having a heart attack. I never realized it was the Wellbutrin because I am allergic to allot of things, so I would attribute it to other things. Has anyone else felt paranoid?

My doc put me on Wellbutrin about 5 months ago. Worked great, then a few weeks ago I shot up out of bed gasping for air as I was about to fall asleep. A couple of days later it started happening while I was wide awake. My right side felt weak and I started having little gasping spasms in periods throughout the day. My girlfriend freaked and made me see my doc, who referred me to a neurologist. Was waiting for the referral to go through and one night it suddenly felt like I got stuck with a cattle prod. Went to the emergency room where they did a CT scan, etc. because they said I'd had a seizure. Saw a neurologist the next day who immediately told me to stop the Wellbutrin. We're now in "wait and see" mode as the EEG was inconclusive. They're trying to confirm it was just the Wellbutrin and not epilepsy. Got another appointment in a couple weeks, but the spasms have been less frequent since stopping the Wellbutrin.

I am looking for answers too! I am 31 and just started getting hives for the first time in my life about a week ago. I am responding to you because my hives also flare up during my sleep, and the itching wakes me up. I can't seem to pin point what's causing them, It's happened 4 times to me this week, so I began carrying Benadryl in my purse. The hives affect my face, scalp, hands and feet, and usually goes away within 4-6 hours. I am not taking any medications, so this cannot be the root of the flare ups. I hope this helps in some way. Nisha.
