Many strange things have been happening to me for the last year and a half, that I did not ever experience before. I just turned 38 years old. I am now suspecting these are side effects from the MIRENA. I want to get opinions about what I'm experiencing and what happens when it's removed. The most profound thing is the feeling of being in a mental bubble. Even though I'm aware of it and I try to be alert, I feel cloudy minded and can't even rely on myself to remember things or commit to things because I never know how I will feel when I wake up each day. Some days are okay while others are completely LOST because I may have struggled to sleep the night before, sweating and soaking my pillow case and waking up with a rapid heart beat, panicking for no apparent reason right out of sleeping. Or, I'm irritable due to discomfort which takes several forms like these: - major moodiness, like feeling totally peaceful one minute and then something small triggers me and I'm angry for hours, later realizing that I was overreacting - visibly shaking hands, especially when I drink just 1/2 cup coffee. - increased oily skin and acne on face, back, shoulders and even in ears, along with thinning hair around face - fatigue and stiffness in the morning, so it takes me forever to get out of bed - off and on fatigue that has me uncontrollably dozing off during the day - bloated tummy (visible), gas and menstrual cramps in no predicable pattern, but I never go more than a week without these things - strange libido, one day I wouldn't care if I ever had sex again, the next night wake up horny as heck at 2 am - ears ringing, jaw pain, mystery pains in back and joints regularly All along I've been assuming these odd things were stress and age related but the more I think about it, there's just too many things, and these things don't necessarily represent the stress of a typical stay at home mom. Sure, I have had stress and anxiety in the past, but they could always be connected to something large going on in my life. Now, the anxiety and moodiness hit unpredictably and indiscriminately, it seems. For a long time now I feel like I'm a total mess physically and mentally, even more so because I realize something is wrong I am pretty sure as of right now that I should get this removed. If the symptoms go away I'll then know what caused them in the first place. I am wondering what happens upon removal, will it also be a roller coaster of physical and mental anguish???????? How long will it last?

I had a lot of the same symptoms....my post is here as well...had mine taken out on Feb. 7th after having it put in the first week of Sept. Like you, I went through the initial adjustment period, then it seemed to subside a bit (not completely) and then I just couldn't stand myself....irritated all the time, snapping at everyone, acne, facial hair, zero libido, fatigue, heart palpitations at night, insomnia, headaches. But one of the scariest things was this feeling of perpetual mental "fog". I have to tell you that within hours of having it removed, I felt like one of those Claritin commercials where they peel back the layer of film...my brain had been so foggy I couldn't concentrate...couldn't even remember the name of the street in front of my neighborhood!!! The first two days post-removal were great....I went from looking 5 months pregnant to having my not-quite-flat but at least only slightly pouchy belly again...my head was clear...and I woke up without a stuffy nose for the first time in months. Day 3, I started to bleed...not too bad, but it went on for about 4 days, like a heavy period but not too clotty (maybe because I only had it in a few months)....then I started to get headaches again, not as bad as before...I think it's because the progestin is out of my body and my body is now starting to produce progesterone again, probably too much of it initially. It's getting a little better and I am hoping after my first regular cycle everything will settle down. The good thing is that the bloating is gone and the fog is GONE! Best of luck to you. This thing has a lot of side effects that most doctors wouldn't admit are connected....my doctor believed me, though.

I totally agree!!! I too am (almost!) 38, and have had the Mirena since June of '06. It wasn't until I read your post that I realized that the mental fog I've been living in is yet ANOTHER sypmtom that I never attributed to it. I suffer from chronic depression and have been on meds for about 6 years, but this last year and a half have been hell for me and my family. It wasn't until the last couple of weeks that I started wondering if it was the IUD. When I found this website last week, I was stunned. The depression, the inability to loose weight (depsite being on WW for almost two years, I initially lost 50 lbs, but after 4 months with the IUD..I have stopped loosing. I am sure that if I hadn't been TRYING to loose weight, I proabably would have gained a ton.) I too have lost a ton of hair, have lower back pain for a few days on and off (cysts???) loss of arm strength, chronic fatigue, moodiness, complete loss of libido, dry than usual skin, dandruff, I think that's about it. But, that's enough! Today I made up my mind. I'm having it removed.

Get it out. it is not right for you and was not right for me. I would have rather had my period every day for the last 4 years than go through the "what's wrong with me" pain! MUCH better after removal. 1 month post removal and I am feeling clear and the mood swings have all but disappeared. I'd rather have a few days of PMS than all of the symptoms that my Mirena caused.

I am glad to hear I am not alone! This is going to sound like a complete repeat of the posts above. I am 38, I had the Mirena implant inserted a little over a year ago, and initially had some unusual bleeding, but I could live with that. Within a month a started getting a few headaches, and then last summer I started getting headaches all the time, and currently they are severe. Other symptoms I am experiencing are ringing in my ears, night sweats, "brain fog", joint pain, malaise, and dizziness (although my husband may say I have always been dizzy). I am having it removed in 8 days and hope to feel better afterwards, but it seems like it may take awhile. I am concerned that I have left it in too long and it has impacted my health and also my work performance because of my sudden forgetfulness.

I have not had mine removed yet. I made the appointment, went, and my doctor talked me out of it and advised me to use estrogen patches (the type menopausal women use). I got them and brought them home, then decided it was crazy to start a pattern of using one drug to offset symptoms of another. Plus, I'm not menopausal!
So, I've done nothing as of yet. Since I'm a person who can't take traditional birth control pills due to vomiting, and I have heavy painful periods, the Mirena has helped both those things - but a trade off has been made with the new syptoms. I am making a few changes with my diet, sleep more, reduce stress, avoid caffiene/alcohol, etc. and give it a few more months to see if I feel any better. Stay tuned.....

I am 27 and have had the Mirena in for almost 2 years. About 4 months after I had the iud inserted I started getting paic attacks. Lately I have been going through night time whole body shakes for about 5 minutes. Likewise I feel very foggy, acne on arms, back and face, heart palpitations, flushed feeling, numbness in fingers and so many more that y'all are experiencing too. I have an appointment Wednesday to have it taken out. I cannot wait. I have spent sooooo much money going to the doctor trying to figure what the crap is wrong with me. My husband was CONVINCED it is the mirena and he searched until he found this sight and I know now he is right. I would not recommend the mirena to anyone now. My concern is now how long it will take me to get back to feeling normal. Oh and about feeling weak, it is all I can do to brush my teeth my arms are give out by the time I get done brushing. My concern for not taking it out was getting pregnant. My husband and I have decided that we will use condoms and use the pregnancy planning kits to try to avoid getting pregnant. If it happens we know we want to have one more and my hubby said he will have a vasectomy, that my health is the most important thing. Anyone considering getting the implant please do a lot of research and thinking before you get it.

Oh I forgot to mention I had an ovarian cyst to rupture Thanksgiving 2007. I have joint pain worst in my left hip, light bleeding almost all the time, sudden sharp headache pains that come and go quickly, and honestly too many things to remember. I am so ready for wednesday to come.

I had all and more of the same symptoms that you all mentioned. I had Mirena for about 4 months when I began to notice that something just wasn't right with me anymore. I tried to convince myself that it was just motherhood taking its toll on me, but the symptoms became more and more severe. I began having terrible headaches, leg cramps, depressed mood, extreme fatigue. These all seem to be effects of hormonal BC but the others were not. I began having anxiety attacks, where I would start feeling like I couldn't breathe, Foggy Head, trouble sometimes even remembering what day it was, racing heart beat, numbness in my lips, weakness when the spells would start, a feeling as if a foreign object were in my throat, trouble swallowing. I'm sure I have overlooked a few. I had Mirena removed 3 months ago and I am sad to say that I am still having these episodes. Some days I go without having one at all and others I can feel it coming on. I would just like to know if anyone else has had the same problems after having the stupid thing removed. I want to feel normal again and I know that everyone else does too!!

My advise to you is have it remove as soon as you can. i have Mirena put inside me on Wed. Nov-12-08. Two days later I felt horrible. I wish I had read all the posting on this site before I have it put inside me. I felt tremendous pain. Not only it felt like a knife is stabbing me inside,,, but I have the worst cramp in my lower pelvic,, my back, it was also going up to my shoulder. I don't know how some people can tolerate having this thing inside them. It felt Horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. So I had it remove 5 days later. I was horrified what it would feel like when they were going to remove it. But, it was a lot less pain when they inserted it than removing it. I'm telling you you will feel 50% better right away after they remove that stupid Mirena thing. Don't be afraid. I promise you you, will feel a whole lot better after you get it remove. I would never ever recommend it to anybody if they ask me. It was the worst mistake I have ever done as far as having a Birth Control. To those people that have not any complaint about this product,,, they are lucky and brave that they could tolerate the pain that this product can offer. Oh! the other thing my Doctor told me afterward that I have it remove,, she said it that it Happen but not often but sometimes when they cant find the string that it require a surgery. That was my other concern. What if??? then I'll get cut through my stomach just like See section just to find the Stupid Birth Control. So please if it hurt you that much now,,, you might lose it inside you. And they have to cut you up just to find it. No thanks. You take care and Good luck to you.
