I have been taking Omeprazole since December 2007 now so 2 and a half months. I had the dose increased to 40mg 3 weeks ago as 20mg wasn't curing the burning in my throat. For a few weeks now i have had increasing vertigo/dizziness and palpitations. I only linked the 2 to the medication just yesterday, googled it just now and confirmed my suspicions to the Omeprazole. Other feeling i have had since taking this medication... Severe dizziness vertigo palpitations headaches/migraines weakness fatigue sweating nausea bloating stomach cramps visual problems intolerance to bright lights aching joints chest pain Now my question to myself is do i come off the tablets and endure the misery of my acid reflux? surely there must be something else we can take for our stomach problems that don't cause these awful side effects. Anyone tried anything else that worked and didn't make them unwell?

I've had almost the exact same symptoms. I'm with you.

I was switched to Nexium as had an inflammed esophagus and experienced worse side effects; blood spots, cramps, blisters on lips and mouth sores. Am back to Omeprazole 20mg and increased to 40mg as wasn't working and experienced similar side effects. I feel sometimes that acid is getting worse as back to 20mg for a month but still have severe sore throat, sore chest and chest. It is a no win situation. Best drug is Lansoprazole which worked first time round but has its side effects!!

I've had almost all the exact same symptoms. I had a ct scan because I thought I had a brain tumor. Luckily, everything including blood work has come back normal. This drug also affected my mom severely and I truly believe its doing the same to me. I just feel like there is a cloud over my head all day every day. The dizziness is almost unbereable. No doubt about it I'm gonna stop taking omeprazole.

Ok so i run out of my 40mg capsules so I had to take 2 of the 20mg instead and for some reason the dizziness, headache, vertigo and palpatations stopped. The doctor re issued me a prescription for the 1 40mg capsules a week ago...yesterday the dizziness returned and today I have a major headache again and the dizziness is getting worse. So I wonder as an experiment if you all try taking 2 doses of 20mg a day it really lessened the side effects for me and i will go back to that next week when i have seen the doctor. I have no idea how splitting the dose in 2 halves stops the side effects but I have proved to myself that it has!

I did try zantac 150mg twice a day a few weeks back, my acid reflux got so unbearable that after a few days I had to go back to the omeprazole. No doubt it is a sub, they usually are!

GET A BLOOD TEST DONE FOR H PYLORI. I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH IT AFTER TAKING OMEPRAZOLE 2 X 20MG FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS. ALL THE SYMPTOMS YOU ARE SAYING HERE,RED RASH ON MY FACE, HEADACHES EVERY DAY,DEPRESSION,CHRONIC FATIGUE,STOMACH BLOATED LIKE I WAS 6MTHS PREGNANT. NOT COOL LOOKING WHEN YOUR A MAN. HEARTBURN IS NOW VERY RARE FOR ME,AND I STILL SMOKE AND EAT FRY-UPS. TAKE REMEGEL WHEN IT GETS TO UNCOMFORTABLE. I ONLY FOUND OUT ABOUT H-PYLORI WHILE GETTING A MEDICAL DONE AT WORK. THE DOCTORS SHOULD CHECK FOR THIS BUG FIRST, BEFORE GIVING OUT ANT-ACIDS WHICH CAUSE OUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM MAJOR PROBLEMS. JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE HEARTBURN DOSENT MEAN YOU HAVE AN ULCER,BUT H-PYLORI IF UNTREATED WILL CAUSE ULCERS.

I tested negative for H PYLORI I was tested 18 months ago. I think alot of my problems are possibly stress related as I have had every test done and they can't find anything so I am thinking I am intolerant to certain foods. I am now on Lansaprazole twice a day and it isn't really working but I no longer get the vertigo, dizziness and headaches on this like I did on Omeprazole.

My father has been on prilosec for several years because of regurgitaiton due to a ventral hernia. He recently went to the hospitlal for an unrelated issue and stopped his medication for several days. What a nightmare, the only good thing was that we found out that his drooling stopped. We tried dosing differences for the prilosec : skip one day take two days in a row etc. Nothing worked and hes still drooling. Also he has been experiencing dizziness. Going to MD to check out what else he can take.
Wish us luck

I was on Nexium for several years with no problems but worried in that stomach acid is necessary for a healthy system. I foolishly switched to Omeprazole because it would save me $80 a year! After a month a began to feel very shakey and attributed it to coffee (only 1 1/2 cups in the a.m.) and experienced some heartburn occasionally--sometimes in the a.m. felt slightly nauseated. I stopped Omeprazole 2 days ago--have been taking 1 tsp. of ORGANIC (unpasturized) cider vinegar--thanks to your mention of it on this site and--cross your fingers!!! it works!!! More time will tell, but I have not been able to go without some antacid for even a day for several years. Amazing! I will post if it stops working. Some where, years ago, I read that we might not have ENOUGH acid in our systems----

WELL, it seems we all have this problem with Prilosec. I STOPPED taking it and I got BETTER with the heart problem.

TRY the Atkins diet adn stop drinking booz. NOW, let me tell you I LOVE Wine but it kills my stomach. Stop eating so much bread and stratchy foods and you'll see your stomach get better, AND MOST of all STOP taking prilosec.

It put me in the hospital and that cos tme $3,000....

ANYONE have simular problems?

I was only taking omeprazole for about 4 days, but I had taken a 14 day course of treatment (20 mg per day) 3 months before, not realizing you're not supposed to do this within 4 months. After about 3 days, I had a pretty major dizziness episode while out for a walk, and I was also experiencing shoulder aches/pains and other abdominal pain. I have just recovered from a blood clot and am genetically predisposed to getting them, so naturally I take symptoms like shoulder/abdominal pain and dizziness extremely seriously. I went to the ER and they did a few tests, including an EKG, which all came up negative. None of the doctors I spoke to even mentioned that it could be the omeprazole that was causing these issues.

I've been off the omeprazole for about 3 or 4 days now, and while things like the abdominal pain and shoulder pain have subsided somewhat, I still have some bouts with the dizziness or just cloudy feeling. Should I give this more time? It seems like this shouldn't take much more time than it already has, though I've read about a couple cases where these side effects persist somewhat.

How revealing! My doctor only insists that dizziness is part of my aging process---a too simplistic answer for me to digest .

I have exactly the same thing and I've only just realised that it is the Omeprazole!! I am kicking myself because it's so obvious now I think about it!! I take the 20mg pill at about 8am in the morning and by 10am I feel as though I am on some crazy mind-bending drug. I'm in a haze, I'm dizzy, I can't see properly, light hurts my eyes and I just feel generally very odd. In the evening, I am absolutely fine. Is this because Omeprazole is at it's stongest after it's digested and then gradually wears off during the day!? I've been back and forwards to the docs and like many of you, everything came back normal (I had the full whack of tests!!) and so my doc and I were stumped. I've been on Omeprazole now for about 5 months and while it does wonders for my IBS, it's making the rest of my life hell. Does anyone else get panic and anxiety once the dizziness starts? I only panic cos I think I am going to faint but then it's a cycle of - Oh I am dizzy, heart rate increases, sweating = full blown panic. I can stop it all by breathing and drinking water but the dizziness/hazy fogg never goes away until hours later.

Argh!!
