I also gained weight from Lamictal. It seems to cause cycles of binge eating of carbs. I am wondering if this is because it is not controlling the depression part of my bipolar. Lamictal does seems to control my anxiety, so it is easier to handle the stress of my work. However, since starting on Lamictal about a year ago, there have been 4 period where I had to take time off work for anywhere from 1-5 weeks, so I wonder how well the Lamictal really is working.

Lamictal was weight neutral for me, but I was tried on a whole lot of other meds back to back that all made me gain weight, about 100 pounds in a year. After I got off the others but was still on Lamictal, I could not lose the weight no matter what I did. Some people gain, some lose on this drug.
Rosslyn, if you were having 4 less intense episodes per year I would say Lamictal was a success for you, depending on how often you cycled before. But if you are still having to take weeks off of work, then Lamictal is not doing all it should. Also, normally Lamictal works better on depression than any other mood stabilizer. If you were only a couple of months into it, I'd say hang in there and see if it gets better. But after a year, I'd ask for something new.
