Your situation sounds like so many of the other stories posted here...
I am by no means a medical professional, but here's what you could do...
seek the advice of another doctor, an asthma/allergy specialist if you can.
Talk to your pharmacist about this also...they are more knowledgable about medications than your doctor is.
Does he have asthma, or just allergies? It sounds like asthma or post nasal drip with the chronic nighttime cough. (read up on asthma and see if that fits his symptoms before the Singulair) Inhalers and nebulizers have been the treatment of choice for asthma for 30 years (Flovent), and have been a reliable way to treat asthma without these alarming side effects. My 3 1/2 yr old son has been on Flovent for a year now and has not suffered a nighttime cough (unless he gets a virus) and he is an extremely happy, loving, attentive child. (read my earlier post about what happened when on Singulair for only 5 days!!)
If it were my boy, I would take him off the meds and see what happens. If he has asthma and it flares up, he will need backup meds and that is where your puffer therapy would come in. Talk to another doctor about this first, but don't assume that your doctor knows what is best for your child.
You know your boy and he is trying to tell you that something is wrong...follow your instincts on this one!!
I wish you all the best with this. Let us know what happens.
oh, and one more thing...I have taken ritalin for ADD and have not found it to be a very effective solution. The effect is short lived and leaves me feeling agitated and a little nauseous once it begins to wear off. I don't know what Concerta is like, but it may be contributing to your problem as well. (a problem that may be caused by the Singulair in the first place!! Did he have ADD before he started on the Singulair??)
I am medication free and am rather disorganized, but what does that matter when I am happy and healthy?!!
I am a mother of an 11 year old son who has, Bipolar, ADHD, RAD & PTSD, on top of all this he also has asthma. My son has had abnormal behaviors since he was 18mos of age. Slowly over the years, my son's destructive & aggresive/violent behavior increased. Because of my son's asthma he was given Singulair to take at night to calm the wheezing, he never had a change in his behaviors contributed to the Singulair itself. My son has been on every stimulant, mood stabilizer, anti psychotic medication you could probably think of. During one of these trials with the medication Concerta, my son's aggresiveness/violence became entirely out of control & was cause for my son at the age of 8 years old to be confined to a child's psychiatric hospital. While he was there, they stopped the Concerta & although he has always had these behaviors & continues to have them, they are not as severe as when he was taking the Concerta. I would recommend you speak to your child's doctor & discuss all the effects it has. After my experience with this medication, I don't recommend it to be used by anyone.
yeah get him off the adhd drugs, that makes him just sit there like a druged up kid. Hello, help your baby. My son and almost all boys at this age are the same. They are little actors. Really honey dont believe the school. Get him off the drug for add or adhd and try sports watch what will happen. he needs to burn off energy not be drugged up.
I have a son 12 and is on Singulair for 6yrs.He is on the honor roll but is not the best student. He too is distructive moody and cant explain why.The teachers like him but all say he cant stay focused and has alot of other symptoms noted.I too took him off and my 6yr old doughter that has shown agressive behavior.I will betalking to his&her doctor tomorrow.
My son has behavior problems like you described. He is now 24, been diagnoised with Bi-Polar Disorder. This diagnosis has changed many times over the years. He has never had asthma, my only child that does not. Have an evaluation done and see what that comes out to be. Discuss this with his doctor who prescribed his meds and singular. He might suggest taking him off the meds. under his supervison to see what happens. He might even give him something else while taking him off the singular to prevent him from getting a asthma attack.
My daughter, 16 has been on singular for 2 years, she has shown no side effects at this time. Last year we did take her off singular for the summer, then when she went back to school she started coughing, weezing and was put back on it. She still shows no signs of bad effects. She also, takes Zoloft for depression and has taken that longer then singular. Get your doctors and professionals involved. You can find out what is causing his behavior and it might not even be singular but a mental illness.
