Wow. Thank god for this Bulletin! I was diagnosed with hypertension at age 28 and tried a variety of drugs with no control over the BP. So, about 2 1/2 - 3 years ago, I was prescribed 100MG of Toprol XL which seemed to control it well, but with debilitating long term illness. I had no idea until today that Toprol XL was causing similar grief to others. The horrible symptoms that I have been experiencing now for several years are Extreme Chronic Fatigue, Profuse Cold Clammy Sweating, Dizzy spells, weight gain, seeing specs of light and thousands of eye floaters, severe depression, muscle aches, headaches. After reading about others with similar side effects, I am confident that it's from this medication. I have had all kinds of testing done including T3 & T4 Throid levels and a full array of blood work with NO LUCK! Regardless of the consequences, I am going to quit this damn medicine today because it appears to take 5 weeks or so to get it out of the body to notice a difference. I am so desperate for change. It is ruining my life because I can 't wake up, I'm always tired even though I get 10-14 hours of sleep. My wife and kids are bummed because I have no energy to do anything, EVER! If you have any other suggestions or would like to comment about this. Sincerely, Sean

Be very careful weaning yourself off of this medicine! Are you going to check with your doctor before doing this? I was on 25 mg or a short time then reduced to 12.5 mg for 18 months and had difficulty weaning off that small amount. It's not impossible, it just takes patience and time. For me to noticeably feel better, it took 3 months. My Dr. became frustrated with me after I complained about the med and took me off cold turkey, DON'T do that. Sleeping returned immediately but muscle issues (tingling and numbness) stayed for a while. One lingering effect I am having is sinus related (toprol/metoprolol affects your bronchial tubes and breathing) and headaches. Take care and follow your Dr's instructions for weaning off.

Well, not exactly. Today is my 3rd day of going cold turkey without Toprol XL.
During my next visit, I will ask him for a different Beta Blocker to try. In the meantime, I am SOOOO desperate for change that I have to start with no Toprol XL. I am praying to god that this finally the cure for all of the ailments that have stolen precious time from my life because of all of the Horrible, debilitating symptoms.

I will keep you posted and thanks for sharing your concern and information

Sincerely,

Sean

Sean,

I know how desperately you want to get off of Toprol - I am currently weaning off after being on it for 5 years - and it is TOUGH - but I am hoping well worth it.

PLEASE PLEASE do not stop cold turkey - this can cause rebound high blood pressure, heart attack or stroke - please take the time to wean off the medication. Your body needs time to adjust to not having the medication - please for your own health and safety - and sanity, please wean off.

I wish you the best of luck - my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Vanessa

I feel your sympathy because I have been on troprol xl 200mg for 7 years now and it has been the only thing that has worked for me. I also take it with atacand as well. I have been through hell on this medication but since it helps my heart beat and blood pressure I have to face those side effects. What really sucks is that I have had the hardest time losing weight on toprol. I'm glad to know that their are people who understand what I am going through because it has been very hard and depressing. I want to get off of it as well but I have to get some better insurance before I can do it.

Like you I am male and was diagnosed at 28 with hpertension. Initially I was on Labetalol 200 twice a day and was then switched to Toprol 50 XL once a day. I lost 50 lbs quit smoking and drinking a year a go and began to experience effects from the medication indicative of the dose then being too strong: Getting dizzy when I stood up, a permanant feeling of being on "7 second delay" lethargy, and fogginess. My blood pressure was down to 90/60 and my pulse rate was 48 after coming back from the gym. My finger tips and toes would be ice cold. I began drinking coffee in the afternoon just to feel warm. These are the symptoms that the medicine is too strong.

My doctor is staggering me off the Toprol which is quite difficult. I was taking the 50 mg. every other day which is ok, and now every two days. Now, by the second day, I wake up feelling as if I have just run a race. my heart races, I am hot and sweatty and in "go mode". It is has really been an adjustment to come of this medication. I have always been very sensitive to any medication. Tylenol sometimes makes me feel altered.

My suggestion: be very careful in stopping this medication and listen to your Dr. I do not have a wife, and kids and am in the best shape of my life at 6'4'' -176 lbs. running 15 miles a week, and I feel my heart and blood vessels trying to "re-adjust" to coming off this drug.

I have been on toprol XL (50mg) for 18 years . I am 69 years old and in excellent shape (bmi 25) exercise 4days/week at gym etc.
My only complaint is that I get breathlessness upon any exertion after eating a meal. I have to stop in my tracks for a few seconds until I catch my breath. ( even when walking the dog). If it is at a time when I haven't eaten, I can run circles around anyone. My BP is 115/70 pulse 58 at rest.
It is scary however, to lose your breath completely. Does anyone have a similar effect?
