I have a daughter who is 19, has been using signulair since six or 7th grade, We have been experiencing since early high school years, extreme mood swings, depressed to happy to yelling to withdrawn. Started changing other meds she was on with no change to behavior, but never stopped the singulair because doctors said this is not a side effect to this medicine. She is now a southmore in college, and through the past year have altered birth control pills thinking this was effecting her, but still no change. After today's discovery and some other peoples simular experience of behavior problems, I am going to ask her to come off of this product. However not sure what to replace with for control of Asthma, just thought I would put this post out there and let you know that their are others experiencing the same problem. Be lucky you caught yours early in age.
My son was diagnosed with asthma about five months ago and was put on many medications to control his asthma and his allergies, including singulair. My son was worse than what you describe yours to be and would even have insomnia and be irritable and angry all the time for no reason at all. My son was then put on Advair which has the side effect of death cause of the salmeterol in it and I have posted my sons side effects while on advair under worriedasthmamom1 if you want to read them along with the other 1000 other peoples side effects while on advair. I researched all night one night till 4 am and found out several things. For one just how unsafe some asthma medications are for our kids, for two I found out that asthma can be helped over 95 % with a herbal medicine containing no steroids at all and I found out that the FDA is approving a new medication for children age 4 for asthma at the end of February 2008. Here are some websites that may be helpful: http://www.respitrol.biz/ and this next one is one where you will find recipes and foods for asthma : http://www.pccnaturalmarkets.com/health/1012000/ . I hope this was helpful. Oh and by the way the new medication I have my son on as he is 4 is the Asmanex twisthaler one puff only at night 110 mcg half of the adult strength. He has had no side effects with this medication and for the first time since he was diagnosed with asthma he has slept through the night and during the day he plays like the other children without any wheezing or coughing . Thus far this is the safest medicine I have come across.
I am also concerned. My son has been on ALbuterol and Pulmicort for a few days after his 1st bout with asthma. He has been CRAZY since and is exhibting some obsessive compulsive behavior as well - constant hand washing, pulling on his pants constantly, etc. Is this a known side effect to Pulmicort? Is it worth it?
Instead of Singulair you might try Accolate. Similar drug, and I find fewer side effects. I have headaches and tiredness and difficulty getting to sleep with Singulair (I think it may raise blood pressure for the first few hours after taking it). With Accolate I have no trouble sleeping, no jitters, and no headaches. Not quite as good for the breathing, but still works ok. Better than just steroids and rescue inhalers for allergic asthma.
This registry is a place to share positive or negative side effects of using Singulair. If you directly experienced a side effect while using Singulair, then we encourage you to enter it here. Please note that entries here are the experiences of individual users, and in no way means that you or anyone else will experience the same side effect, since the same medication affects people in different ways. Please always contact your physician.
