My daughter will be 2 in June and she suffers with asthma she has been taken diff meds such as xopenex, pulmicort, orapred, and now singulair. i researched all the other meds and took her off but the asthma specialist said she needed the pulmicort and i asked her pediatrician what he thought and he prescribed singulair he said it was completely safe and i had nothing to worry about but now i am very much worried because my daughter is only 21 months old and can not tell me exactly what wrong if anything. she has only been taking this singulair since last night so it has been twice she has taken it and last night she had a nightmare. she was fussy going to bed, it took a long while to wind her down she normally falls asleep between 9 and 10 pm last night she went out around 12. her lungs r very sensitive and i want her to get better but a lot of these meds have really bad side affects and who's to say what will be the long term affects and thats what i worry about the most. i just don't know what to do and I'm very worried. i came across this site by accident but I'm glad i did cuz now i know that this is not safe to give my 21 month old daughter.

I have an 8 year old daughter that has been on singulair since the age your child has started. She started with Singulair, albuterol and flovent. She had the nightmares, complained of pains in her legs and her bevahior was what I chalked up to the terrible twos. When she said at the age of two that she wanted to stop breathing, I chalked it up to the flovent being a steroid that is inhaled. I had her taken off the flovent and never thought it was because of the singulair. Bad behavior persisted, but no suicidal thoughts. Other issues began, stomach aches, refusal to go to bed, hating the family pet, fighting with us over everything, wierd eating habits, weight gain, etc.. Once school started, there has been behavior issues, focus problems, laziness regarding completeing tasks. Finally, after 6 years of being on this medication, I found this site and was shocked that my child is not alone and the issues are very common. I have taken my child to a pulminologist to see where in her lungs the issue is and looked into a different medication. Now my child is on one medication (not mulitple), and her breathing is the best that it has ever been. Her behavior is improving every day (she even loves the family pet), she goes to bed at a reasonable hour and sleeps thru the night, her behavior in school is improving, her focus issues have improved dramatically. Sadly, the laziness is a problem, but all kids are lazy from time to time. These changes were seen 3 weeks after taking her off Singulair. Sadly, we are not at 100% perfect, but after seeing her suffer for 6 years, we realize that it is going to take time and effort on our behalf to make it better.

Pediatritions can only state that your child may or may not have asthma, but pulminologists specialize in treating respratory issues. There are other options out there. It would not be a bad idea to look into another opinion from a specialist. There are many medications out there to help your child and a specialist can help you find one that your child can take and have no reactions to.

Wishing you the best health for your child.
