My 9 year old daughter has been on sigulair since she was 5. She just recently started having trouble with concentration and behavior. She is always sad and cries alot .She is an honor/gt student but just recently has been having trouble with her school work. She has also begun to hurt her brother and talks about how she wishes she was dead.We are really concerned and she began counseling. Her nuerologists says it could be depression but im thinking i should take her off singulair. She has had headaches, stomach pain, depression ,mood swings and weight gain.

I wouldn't be surprised if the singulair is causing her problems, My daughter is 11 years old and has been diagnosed by her neurologist with pseudo tumor cerebri , (swelling and fluid in the brain ),my daughter has had numerous problems through the years ,and has had weight gain, crying spells, mood swings ,allergies, severe stomach pain and diareah, acid reflux disease, etc. she is also an a+ student in school and won the spellig b and is representing the school for the county, she had some trouble doing her school work, and the headaches were so bad ,she missed 45 days of school last year and 23 days this year.she would be bedridden when the headaches come. i would like for you to know the neurologist wanted her to take 50 mg of topomax a day which she has been on for over a year.and then they upped it to 100 mg a day. I thought to myself there has to be something i can do for her.I happened to remember that my other daughter could not take singulair because it gave her severe high blood pressure at the age of 10. I don't know why i hadn't thought of this earlier . My youngest daughter has been on this medicine for asthma since she was 2 years old.I imediatly took her off the singulair. After two weeks she was headache free and has done better in school and all around. I think singulair has side effects that should be talked about more often to the parents, before the Drs. just give it to all these children and have them suffer all these things and the parents have to figure out what is wrong and worry for their children. I sincerely hope your daughter gets well, and I hope this helps you.

I would not be suprised that Singulair is the culprit. My daughter has been on Singulair for 6 years and since she was taking this medication, she has had nothing but issues. Behavior in school, at home, socially have been affected. Aches, pains, mood swings, the desire to not go to bed at night, weight gain, strange eating patterns. Sadly, since she started taking this medication prescribed by her pediatrition, there was no reason to question it. The site of the manufacturer never stated the potential side effects my daughter has been experiencing as ever being an option. Doctors get their information from the manufacturers. This site opened my eyes that there is the chance that you can have this sort of reaction from this medication. Needless to say, I have taken my daughter off this medication and took her to a specialist for her asthma, Now she is on a new medication and is doing better than ever. All of the above issues are going away and she is improving every day. I know that this will take time for her to become 100% since she was suffering for so long. I was almost ready to have her tested for A.D.D., but how can a child that is so intellegent (above average student with accelerated abilities) be A.D.D.? What a relief it is to see that finding this information a month ago helped my daughter get better without putting her an additional medication to counteract the side effects of a medicine that was making her suffer.

The health and well-being of our children is our main concern. Knowledge is power and with this information given to you, I hope you can find a solution to get your child back. Talk to your doctor, see a specialist for options and I hope your daughter gets better.

My eight year old was on Singulair from age 5 until January of this year. Within two weeks of taking her off of the medication we saw improvement. She had the exact symptoms minus the weight gain of your daughter. We were on our way to a Psychologist due to the drastic change in behavior when we tried taking her off of this med. When I look back, she began at age 5 with very bad dreams and bed wetting. We took this as a stage. The nightmares stopped last summer but day time things like depression, mood swings, and stomach/leg aches began. She is getting better every day!
