I had Mirena in for 3 1/2 years. The first year was basically a fog. I started spotting, moodiness was ok, bad acne. The next 1 1/2 years I experienced light bleeding, acne , slight dizziness, some fatigue. On the third year that I was on mirena that's when things began getting worse. Around a month after my 38th birthday I started getting really bad symptoms. The worst part was the Dizziness. I got severe headaches, major dizziness, moodiness, less patience with everyone, weight gain, increased appetite, depression, fatigue during day, nervousness, panic attacks, some hair loss, bleeding gums. The dizziness was the worst. I would get panic attacks along with the dizziness. This especially got worse around time of period. I noticed just before I was scheduled to get my period I would get these crazy dizzy spells and anxiety. I have had numerous test and gone to Cardiologists, Nuerologist, Gyno. The gyno's are the worst. They deny that it is the mirena. However, I have been doing some research by myself and have come across many websites like this one. Most of the women who have been on Mirena have had the same symptoms that I have had. The one symptom that I did not here of was bleeding gums. During my pregnancy I noticed that I would bleed when brushing my teeth. Of course this is normal because of hormones. However, about a year after I gave birth to my daughter my gums were still bleeding. I was on mirena for about 6 months already. The dentist had me go in 4 times a year, because he was concerned. They thought it was bizzare that I had this promblem at 38, Wanted to know if anyone else experienced this? Also, wanted to disclose that in the early years of mirena I was taking Prozac. Around the second or third year of mirena I started to be a little forgetful about taking the prozac daily. This may be a reason why my panic attacks came on strong around third year.

Oh, I know what you mean by the dizziness! I've had the Mirena for 7 months and it seems to be getting worse. I'm afraid to go to the store because of the fear of passing out! I'm just going to hang in there until a year has passed and see how it goes. Thanks for posting your experience. It's nice to know we're not alone.

I have had the bleeding gums too! The progestatin (levonorgestrel) in Mirena which is also used in certain oral anticonceptives disturbs your fluorine levels gradually over time. I got this from an advisory site about the side effects of birth control pills only meant for GP's. My teeth are getting better now, and I'm 3,5 months post removal.

I too have been on the Mirena going on 2.5 years. The 1st year was ok from what I remember. I think I actually had a sex life then and thought "hey people are right you do get an increased sex life turning 30. Ya right. Recently I found out that the Mirena has hormones which has been something I've never handled well w/birth control contreceptives. Now it all kind of makes sence. Absolutley no sex drive, lack of patience, recent anxiety, horrible headaches. Could it all be side effects from this BC method? I've thought that maybe I should go on Prozak because I feel like I'm losing my mind sometimes and thought it was just a "hormone" thing but no can't help but wonder if I get the Mirena out will I go back to normal????

I went in 3 months ago to get my Mirena removed and the doctor talked me out of it and prescribed me 20 mg daily of Prozac. It wiped the depression which is nice. But I couldnt lose weight and I looked pregnant and had no sex drive and I just KNEW it was hormonal. I had Mirena removed about a week ago and my doctor bitched the entire time. I dont really get why they have such a disposition with removing it. Its my money, do what I say!!!
THAT VERY EVENING my stomach was back to normal. I think it'll take awhile to lose the weight and get the sex drive back, but I am absolutely amazed that the bloating was gone so fast.

My bloating was gone the very next day after removal. It was amazing. I had many of the same side effects....dizziness, moodiness, nausea, cystic acne, headaches, fatigue, anxiety, heart palpitations....it was bad. My periods were lighter with the Mirena but I was spotting 3 weeks out of 4!! My mental fog was gone by the end of the day of the removal (Feb. 7) and yesterday I realized that it was the first day that I have been completely dizziness-free since the removal...so I hope this is a good sign. Sex drive slowly coming back. Still waiting for my first post-removal period. Glad to have this thing out of my body and looking forward for everything to normalize. This thing is not as innocent as the maker would like us to believe. Too many of us are having the same sort of problem. Good luck to you.

I also have bleeding gums and never thought it was related. I have had Mirena for just shy of two years and I am 27. I have been going to doctors for the last 1 1/2 years trying to figure out what is wrong with me but everyone says it is anxiety and want to out me on GAD meds. I have an appointment Wednesday to get it out but am fearful of how I will feel afterward.
