My sister was prescribed Avelox on Tuesday, March 11, 2008. Within 15-20 minutes she began having breathing difficulties. Because she has asthma her initial thought was that she was having an asthma attack. She tried asthma treatment and it didn't help. She soon was unable to breath. Her husband called 911, they responded quickly but had to intubate her in the ambulance. They know that she was without oxygen to her brain for at least 3-5 minutes. This caused seizures that lasted 20 hours before I.C.U. could get them under control. Unfortunately it caused brain damage leaving her with no higher brain function (vegetative state). As she has worked in the medical field for over 14 years she did not wish to be kept alive by artificial means. On Tuesday, March 18, 2008 her ventilation tube and feeding tube were removed. It is now Thursday, March 20, 2008 and she is in a wonderful Hospice House awaiting her death. She had taken the same class of antibiotic in the past with no reaction. Really not sure what caused this one. She was going through chemo for breast cancer, but had just finished and was scheduled to start her radiation treatment. Her chemo doctor told us that since her reaction, they have had another patient who went into anaphylactic shock after taking Avelox. My sister is only 43 years old. This medication should be taken off the market.

Dear KaFoster5,
Iapologize for the typos ahead of time;Avelox Has ruinedmy hands (tendons and joints).

KaFoster,Iam so saddened and angry tohear of your sisters terribleordeal. My heart and prayers go out to you. I tookAvleoxthefirst week inMarch and Iam insevere painallover, espceically Hands and arms and shoulders. I canbarely walk at times and i cant even open my front door this mornin toget the newspaper! It is HORRIBLE, as you, your dear sister amnd family have also found out.

I just feel awful for you and I want you to know that you are not alone and that people care. Later, when or if you are able,I hope you willeither file an complaint with the FDA and sue Bayer,if you can.It is the ONLY way they willlisten, apparently, are if people sue them iccessantly, then, maybe, willthey listen??
In my state,Icannot sue (and I am NOT a suing perslon) but toprotect others,I woulod in a heartbeat. Apparaently, tho my state has given pharm.co's something called "Qualified immunity" which means they cannot be sued(yes!--crazy!)

I pray your sister is kept comfortable and that God Himself helps you all get through this devstatingtime. God Bless you all,and if you could tellyour sister for me, Iwouold say tellher I am praying for her and you all,and that I am just so sorry this has happened toher and the rest of you. I'msosorry you have had to edure this;something that should NOT have even been onthe market inth firdt place (get this month's(APril) REader's Digest and see the SPecialReport on the FDA).

Again,My heart goes out toyou and I'llpry foryou.

Sincerely, Karen from Michigan
(again sorry for thetypos,my hands are incrediblypained and dysfunctional now)

Dear Kafoster5, I am so very very sorry about your sister. My heart aches for you all. This never should have happened to her and to you. You are all in my prayers. Thank you for posting despite all the grief and pain and anger you must feel. You will help many people with your account of all that happened. May you be comforted and strengthened, and may your sister have a peaceful passing.
