Hi, I'm 27 and had Mirena inserted in Oct. 2006, six weeks after I had my little boy. I have been experiencing extensive hair loss, fatigue, lack of sex drive, heart palpitations, intolerance to cold, and inexplicable mood swings (especially including anger or depression). I haven't gained much weight; however, I have been incapable of reclaiming my pre-baby weight regardless of diet and exercise. I wrote off most of these symptoms during the first year, since I thought they were just the result of my hormones getting back to normal after child birth. But now that my son is almost 19 months old, I've really started to get worried. Not only are these problems NOT dissipating, they are getting WORSE. I've recently been doing some research, and it appears that these symptoms are indicative of hypothyroidism. I was planning on undergoing treatment for that affliction. However, I don't know what I should do now that I've discovered that so many other women on Mirena are having the same problems as I am having. Perhaps it would be better to switch to a different birth control. It would be stupid to take one drug in order to counter-act the side effects of another, wouldn't it? It may be less convenient, but I know for a fact that I never had problems like this when I used Nuva Ring.

Hi - I, too, wondered if my thyroid was just coincidentally acting up while I had the Mirena, considering that the general medical community was very strongly denying that Mirena would cause such side effects. I am considerably older than you (43) so it would not be a stretch to think that things might be going haywire. After having the Mirena removed on Feb. 7th, I can tell you that I've had no more fogginess, bloating, fatigue, heart palpitations (scary!), mood swings and my libido is slowly returning. If you didn't have these issues prior to the Mirena, I'm guessing it's not your thyroid, although I'm not a Dr. I think they can do a simple blood test...but like you said, why should you have to take another medication just to be able to tolerate this form of birth control? From what I've read here and on many, many other forums, these side effects can continue to hang around and, in fact, can get worse. I can only tell you that I feel SO much better and so much more like myself after just 6 weeks of having it out. You are too young to be suffering these symptoms!! Best of luck to you, you need to feel better so that you can enjoy your little boy! Pretty soon he'll be looking you in the eye like mine does (he's 12) and you'll wonder how it happened so quickly. Take care.

Oh my God! I am so glad that I found this web site. Thank you for telling your story on how this damn thing is affecting you. I thought something was really going wrong in my body. I felt as though I was still post pardom until I read this. I was wondering why my chest hurt and felt as though my heart was skipping. I have been fighting severe headaches for about a week. Along with the headaches I had bouts of dizzyness and feeling as though I was going to throw up. I have taken 2 pregnancy test and (surprise) both were negative. I was about to try to go see some kind of therapist because of my mood swings. I would get so mad at my husband or my 10 month old son, then I would want to cry because of it. I haven't gained any weight but I can't seem to lose it either. I am beginning to think that I should get this thing removed. My back is killing me, my head won't quit hurting, my abodomin is constantly cramping, and I just don't think not using condoms is worth all this crap.
Again Thank You for all your information.
Brandi

Before I figured out Mirena was causing all of my problems I had my thyroid tested to see if that was causing my problems (weight gain, fatigue, irritability, hair loss, joint pain, back pain.....). All tests came back normal. I had my Mirena removed about a month ago and am feeling MUCH better. Weight is slowily coming off, breast tenderness is gone, back pain is gone, joint pain is getting better, and best of all I'm happy and my sex drive is back! I still have some bad days where some of teh symptoms come back, but they are diminishing. I've read it can take a few months to get back on track. Good luck!!!
