I am a 55 year old male. I have been on 40mg of Lipitor for 2 years after having a stent put into my heart. About 6 years ago I was on 20mg ov Lescol for a year but I stopped taking it because my knees became very weak and I could not walk up stairs without holding on. I am now experiencing severe lower back pain down into my left buttock, leg muscle and knee weakness, and I also have mild depression or a lack of motivation may be a better term. I am going to stop taking the statins and see if I have any improvement. Several years ago, when I stopped taking Lescol, my knee weakness and pain did not improve. Through research on the internet I discovered that some symptoms do not improve by stopping the medication. My goal now is to ensure it does not get any worse.

I am a 60 yr old female with moderately high cholesterol. I have been on three statins. With Zocor I had muscle pains and intense burning in my upper body, which stopped immediately when I stopped the drug. I started on 10 mg of Lilpitor in 05. I took it for 9 months with few problems. My cholesterol dropped to 225. The Dr. wanted it lower, so she upped my dosage to 20mg. A few months later the trouble started; Muscle pains and weakness, more burning, but the depressin was the worst. I had dealt with depression in the past, so I knew what was happening. I felt like I was in a black hole, and I was angry at my husband for no reason. I did some research and discovered that cholesterol is important to the brains's ability to use seratonin. My cholesterol had fallen to 185, so I don't know if it was the low (for me) cholesterol, or the drug that was the problem. But I was feeling much happier within two days of stopping the drug. The weak and sore muscles took a liitle longer to resolve. I urge you to Google "statins and depression". There are case studies of suicides connected to statin use. I'm not sure how I will deal with my condition, but I am trying fish and flaxseed oil, and lots of oat bran. I do know that I will not take statins again. Good luck to you.
