Please ask you dr to check the side effects of levaquin. You are having an adverse reaction to the drug. There are safer drugs and you need to make sure you get them. This poison does damage that takes a very long time to go away if they go away at all. It's not to scare you but go to www.fqvictims. org and also www.fqresearch.org and see for yourself. You might want to print out a few things to show your dr. Most of us were totally healthy until we were poisoned by a fluroquinolone. Don't take no for an answer. There are other meds that are safer and insist that you get them.
To answer your question, I will never know which of my symptoms were caused by my original illness and which were caused by the Levaquin and which were caused by the resulting insomnia. I started out with something like the flu and ended up with exhaustion, dizziness and the feeling of broken glass in my chest (although a chest xray showed nothing wrong).
The only symptom I can say for sure was caused by the Levaquin is the insomnia. The reason I'm sure about that is because I've never experienced insomnia like it before. I've had very occasional bouts of sleeplessness when worried or anxious about something but this was totally different. It was a very physical reaction. If I can compare being awake with being above water and being asleep with being underwater, the insomnia was like floating on top of the water and being unable to go under. No matter how exhausted I was, I could not fall asleep, not even for a nap. The insomnia began on the same day that I started taking the Levaquin. It took about a month for it to finally go away and I have not had it since then.
My side effects (rash, severe headache, joint pain in knees and hips) stopped after medication. I was in the hospital and they couldn't figure out what was wrong with me, I kept passing out when I stood up- my blood pressure would go so low every time I stood up. Once I was feeling better, they gave me another dose of Levaquin and watched it all happen again before their eyes. That's how they were sure that it was the medicine.
