I am 50 years old...nearly bled to death from fibroids and became anemic. I had extremely heavy periods and had to receive a transfusion of 2 units of blood when my blood count went down to 7. My options were 1) Do nothing...2) Take 6 months of Lupron to hopefully bump me into menopause....3) Fibroid embellization...4) Hysterectomy. I am trying to avoid a hysterectomy....and needed time to get my blood count up before any other procedure. I have had some of the side affects...hot flashes, mood swings, night sweats,.....but I had them before because I was pre-menapausal anyway so there is really no difference. Have not noticed any weight gain and I get my 3rd shot today. Everyone's body is different...for now Lupron has been a life saver for me.

Hi. I am 47 and had fibroid problems in my late thirthies. After numerous drugs, scrapings, I had to have 3-4 shots of Lupron. I bleed from Nov.4 until beginning of May!!! I was in tremedous pain and severly anemic. I'd bleed through napkins and tampons, in gushes. It was horrible. I was concern about the Lupron because at that time I read there was guaranteed small percentage of bone loss. I was justing to find that out when I read your posting. Because of my age, I had a myonectomy (sp?). That's when all the tumors were removed (11 total the sizes of oranges), instead of the uterus. My dr. said that the fibroids could return but hopefully I'd go through menopause by then. Like you I also started in my late thirthies too. However, now at 47, I still have not gone through menopause, never decided to get pregnant and I believe the fibroids are back!!! Each period is getting worse and the times between are getting shorter. If you are 50 why don't you go ahead and have the hysterectomy? I wish I had now. If you keep your ovaries I don't think you need hormones and there is all kinds of lubricant available. But if still concern, try the myonectomy. God Bless.
