I just heard on Fox News that a young man just committed suicide while on Singulair. He was normally happy and went down hill when he started on Singulair. The FDA is now investigating.
Did it occur that the ADHD meds had conflicts with the Singulair? I have taken singulair for 8 years and my 7 yo has been on it for 3 years and we have never been less ill than lately with the use of Singulair. I had as many as 3 asthma attacks per month with trips to the ER many of those times. I have had no ER trips for asthma attacks since I began to take the medicaiton. I am also not depressed and have not thought of suicide since then either. I will say I thought of suicide a lot when I was not breathing well and could not get better w/o a hospital stay. SO perhaps it varies with persons and interactions with their meds. Check that one again.
My son has always been an intelligent, popular and happy child. Lately he has mentioned killing himself several times. He had mentioned this last fall also, but when it subsided (we took him off the Singulair for the coldest winter months), I thought the worst of it was over. Three days ago I had a conversation with my husband that I thought Mikey was depressed and that we should find a psychatrist for him to see. When I read the report yesterday, I decided to stop the Singulair immediately. This is the only drug he takes and now I believe that it is the cause of his depression and anger outbursts. This is a side effect that should be clearly pointed out to new users. I had no idea! Thank goodness we found out before something more serious happened.
Please respond to my reply. I can help your family.

I can so relate to your story! My son, who just turned 15 last week has been suffering with depression and anxiety for 2 years. He has been on singulair since he was 11 years old. When he started Jr. HIgh and was playing football he started taking his singulair, he started have mood swings, angry all the time, thought the whole world hated him. especially his classmates. As time has gone on, he has been homebound from school off and on and I have had to take Family leave time from work. We have seen our doctors, therapist, and now a psychologist. When they started him on depression meds. I asked several times is it good to take singulair with these meds? I was assured it was. His worse times are when he is on singulair for long periods of time. He has lost 2 years of his life. He is a good student, but finds it hard to concentrate, sleep and has had stomach issues, and panic issues. I feel and hurt so bad for him, especially when he has asked me to make it stop. He is currently on homebound again from school, I have taken him off singulair and I am not sure when or if he will be able to be weaned off his depression medications. No one except those of you who have the same experience can understand the pain and suffering my son and our family have been through! Hospitals, doctors, therapist, psychologist etc... My son is a great kid and deserves a normal life! What can we do about this and will he return to a normal life style in his future?
