I had been on singular for 10 months and have gained 40 lbs. and retention of water in my calves and ankles. I spoke to my doctor but that fell on deaf ears. He told me that they are not side effects of singular. My eating habits are the same, if anything I have never eat better due to the weight. I had been thin all my life - maybe too skinny. I am 49 years old. Also, due to the weight and water retention I have started a health club with no weight loss. I went off the singular 3 weeks ago, my calves are back to normal, but still have the 40 lbs. Anyone have any advised. MK

Maybe I think you should re-consider your medication, from what I gather you are an asthmatic and there are alternatives such as SYMBICORT, it helps with opening up the bronchii and also prevents exacerbative attacks or un easiness caused, Also due to the small amounts of steriod intake which would be once a day you will be saved frm adverse side effects as well as exercise and enjoy your life again

My 62 year-old mother was prescribed singulair by her doctor about 2 years ago. She was also prescribed diuretics due to edema in her legs as a result of a car accident about 10 yrs ago. She'd go off and on the medicine for about 1-2 months at a time. Although my mom is over-weight, she had been eating less and steadily loosing weight. The last 6 months I noticed a significant weight gain. Her legs had swollen 3 times their size. My mother attributed the swelling to the Singulair in that it might be sodium based . She doubled her diuretic pill dose in the hopes that it would help. Nothing worked. She pleaded with the doc in the hopes he could find a stronger water pill. Nothing. Finally, we took her to the lymphedema clinic, where they wrapped her legs up in cotton wraps. The swelling dissappeared! A few weeks later she went back on the Singulair. The edema returned. Not only that, her disposition changed. She would, just start chastising and berating everyone for no reason. Everything irritated her. We did not know what would set her off from one minute till the next. And tremors. Today, by a miracle, we saw the report concerning Singulair's dangerous side effects. Everything was clarified. I am also on sinulair. I, for the last few weeks have been experiencing periods of forgetfulness and mental fogginess. Zyrtec I find is much safer for allergies, as for asthma, we are going to settle for the O.T.C. Bronc Aid.
