I have been taking Singulair since it came on the market almost 10 years ago. I am now 26 years old and working on a Masters in Psychology. My theory is about this drug that people that are experiencing depression, and suicidal thoughts are prone to having this without the drug. I cannot skip a day without this medication or else I start having severe flair ups. I am writing because it always seems when there is a good drug on the market it gets pulled because of the side effects. I hope Merck does extensive testing and surveying to make sure of these allegations before the drug is discontinued. Also I took Singulair the entire time I was pregnant and my child has no kind of birth defects etc.

I just wanted you to know that when my child was on Singular she was not on any other medication. She was diagnosed with childhood asthma and was prescribed Singular. I did extensive research before allowing her to take this medication. In 2001 there was absolutely no research to indicate that Singular could cause nightmares or as Merck came out in 2006 saying vivid dreams that may cause hallucinations. Being a psychologist, I would hope to believe that you of all people would know that any right-minded parent would not subject their child to a medicine that could cause this kind of side-effect. If you read the forum closely almost all the parents said they had no idea that Singular was the culprit of their child's behavior patterns. My daughter was a happy and fearless child that was extremely bright and was advanced for her age before starting Singular. My husband and I believed we were so fortunate that we never went throught the terrible two's. When she started on Singular we believed that her behavior change was due to terrible threes; however it continued through 4 then 5 then 6 until we took her off the medication. As a psychologist you know that this is a very impressionable time period of a child's life. It is a time when they start to learn to use rationale through neuro and cognitive development. For parents such as myself I will never know if her rationale was actually embedded from medicinal causes of being on a drug that induced neuro developmental effects (anxiousness due from the vivid, and I stress, very extreme nightmares) or from true genetic make up. I'm am glad that it has been an effective drug for you; however, maybe the side effects are not as extreme in adults as in children. This drug was never tested on children as most drugs aren't because of profit margins. Most drugs perscribed to children are only tested on adults and once the pharmaceutical compnay reaps the profit do they then take the chance on saying it is safe for children. Research it yourself - it's all over the internet and on the pharmaceutical companies own websites - spending money to research true marketable children's drugs is not profitable; therefore, is rarely done unless they know it will produce benefits to all children. Merck actually came out with Singular in 1995. It wasn't until 2000 that doctors began to look at it as being the tell all drug. The company mislead the medical industry by not revealing all the side effects. In 2005 or 6 by force of the so many complaints, Merck then revealed that the drug could cause vivid dreams and hallucinations. You tell me what normal 2-3 years old child would understand that they were hallucinating. This is a time when they believe in imaginary friends. When something feels real to them it is embedded in their mind forever. You being a psychologist should know this. The more I think about the more afraid I am that you will actually be in practice one day. Please continue to get educated.

depression and thoughts of suicide are not "just" a side affect. Try being a mother trying to do the best for your child, when actually your hurting them. Try seeing your 13 year old daughter crying wanting to kill herself. THIS IS NOT JUST ANY SIDE AFFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If there are serious side effects the drug should be pulled off the market. Far as your flare up without the medication maybe that is in your head. People react to medications differently and you needs to be respected. Are you seriously seeking a degree in psychology????????????????

I was on Singular for quite some time and I would have the "vivid dreams" as they call it every once in awhile. About six months ago I had such a terrible "vivid dream" of my 4 year old being shot in front of me I was terrified to go back to sleep. But I kept taking the medicine and trying to sleep and not think about that terrible nightmare I had. After visiting my allergy and asthma doctor she asked how everything was and I said pretty good if I could get the nightmares to go away. When she heard this she asked what medicines my doctor had put me on and I said all the basic allergy meds and inhalers and Singular. She said stop taking the singular and we will up your Advair to cover it and see if that helps. Well I am happy to say that since I am no longer taking that med I have had no problems with the nightmares. Some say its all in your head but I honestly believe there is something in that medicine that could honestly drive someone crazy or worse.
