READ THIS: I'm posting this again for the sanity of the concerned parents on this board to let you know you're not alone: My 5 year old son was diagnosed with mild asthma and put on Singulair. Within a few months he began having uncontrollable fits of rage, displayed self-loathing behavior, had night terrors, and was inconsolable during these episodes. He became very destructive and was a danger to himself and our family. He even talked about killing himself and would say things like "I don''t want to be in this life anymore" and "I want to kill myself". He would threaten my wife and his siblings and told them he wanted to kill them. It was a truly terrifying experience. Our pediatrician was clueless to these side affects and recommended we have our child go through a psychological evaluation. I knew this was not my child''s normal behavior so I searched the internet for Singulair side affects and found some message boards where parents just like myself were telling their stories of their children''s aggressive behavior. I immediately took my son off the drug and within a couple days he was back to his normal self. He told us that he no longer has "that feeling inside of him". Five year old children don''t even know what suicide is and to see my son talk like this was extremely frightening. He is a sweet, intelligent, loving boy who had never exhibited behavior like this until he went on Singulair. We have not seen this behavior after taking him off the drug.

What medicine did you switch your child to? I'm starting to wonder if Singular is causing my child to act like he does.

We got him a Xoponex inhaler and he's only had to use it once in the past two weeks...he has mild asthma. We kept him off Singulair to see if his behavioral issues would go away and they did!!

After Singular we to put our daughter on Xoponex for a few treatments and her asthma went away. It did not cause any side effects or bring back the nightmares that Singular did.

Thanks for creating this post! My 13 year old son has been on singulair for 7 years. He has had mood swings, tremors, etc. and I have been debating for some time now if he should seek counseling for his intense anger. After researching this "poison" that he has been taking every evening since he was 6, and realizing that I am the one making it worse by insisting he take his meds, I could just cry! He will no longer be taking it!!!!!!

WHAT CAN WE DO TO ALLERT OTHER PARENTS?

My son started taking Singulair two years ago. The changes I have noticed in him are disturbing. He was always a gentle, smart boy who loved music. He was quick to laugh and had many friends. This past year he began to isolate himself. He no longer wanted play dates and would frequently cry for no reason. He developed insomnia and on the weekends was hard to rouse and sometimes slept as late as one PM. He talked about how he wanted to be alone and said he wanted to live on the street away from his family. I could go on and on about the inexplicable, negative changes in my son. I told myself maybe it was just adolescence come early. He seemed so miserable and would no longer play with his younger brother when just a year or more ago they were inseparable. The most shocking thing is a few days ago I found a poem he had written, talking about how the world was a horrible place and it might be better if he died and flew away. You can imagine how heartbreaking it is to read something like this from a once happy, adored 10 year old. Just a day later I heard the news about Singulair causing suicidal thoughts. I immediately pulled him off the medication and the improvement in his mood already is enormous. I am fighting mad! Who would think an allergy medication would make a child's world black and full of despair? It makes me sick to remember how every night I would remind him to take his Singulair thinking I was protecting him. Are there other children out there who have developed mood disorders and are taking this poison? I want to join a class action lawsuit. What can parents do to stop things like this happening again?

My 5 yo grandson has been on Singular since he was 2. Recently we have noticed a change in this usually sweet, good natured little boy. I asked my daughter to ask her MD if this change could be related to his asthma meds. She has an appt tomorrow, but just told me about finding this site. This really scares me and I am wondering why the press is reporting garbage about Britney and Miley, and not about a medication that has very serious side effects that I am sure, most parents are not aware of. Please keep posting any new info. Thanks to all, Kim Annese
