My best friend, hospitalized for the past 4 days, was given Keppra (100 ml of 10mg/1000ml via IV) by a neurologist, who was trying to stop an extremely severe 4-day old migraine. She immediately felt significant relief, then fell asleep. She awoke several hours later, acting extremely different: beligerant, angry, irrational, confused, uncooperative, and just very, very mean. In the over 10 years I've known her, she has never acted anything like this. She was even mean toward her minor daughter. She fell asleep again, then awoke worse. She fell asleep again, then awoke the next morning (almost 24 hours later) acting even worse! Her conduct was so bad she would qualify for a medical hold (against her will), but I told the medical staff that would only make matters worse. She ripped her IV out of her arm, when there was no need for her to do that (and someone was in the hospital room with her 24/7. Fortunately, she's fallen asleep again. I'm very concerned this "medication" has caused some type of permanent brain damage, as the medical staff told me all of the Keppler should have metabolized out of her system by now.
Has anyone had or heard of a similar reaction? I'm especially interested as to adults, who where given Keppler for treatment of a migrain.
Thank you very much.
