My son started Singulair in the 7th grade and his personality changed but I never attributed it an asthma medication. He was on it and off of it for the next five years. On it again last year, he committed suicide on October 2nd, 2007. I consider his suicide a "side effect."

I am so sorry to hear this. These reports need to be reported to the FDA. I reported my son's side effects to them the night I heard about this. My sin has had suidical thoughts, starting at age 4, and still had them at age 8 when I took him off this drug. It appears that no one knew about this side effect, but I wonder what exactly Merck knew. I know this is a difficult time for you, but your son may just be the one of the angels that can save other kids. So sorry for your loss.

I am amazed to hear of all these incredibly young children having suicidal issues. That's horrifying to me. For some odd reason I understand it in teenagers and adults, but not toddlers and very young children. Little ones can't come up with these things without there being a catalyst. Is it their asthma meds?

Dear Kate,

I am so sorry for your loss and can only try to understand your pain. My daughter a Singulair user for three years tried to kill herself with an overdose on March 10, 2008. This was after a year and a half of psychiatrists, counseling and andidepressants/anxiety medication. I just got her out of the hospital on March 20th. I screamed out loud in pain when ABC's newcast about it came on TV Friday morning. To the extent I can, I understand how you must feel. I believe we must report these incidences to the FDA (which I did) as they are reporting only a "handful" of incidences with this medication up to this point. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers...I am so sorry.

Kim
