My son 10, has been on Singulair since he was 4 yrs old for Asthma and allergies. His last dose was 3/26/08. He has always been my emotional child, he is 2yrs older than this younger brother. Some of his side effects included headaches, stomaches, leg cramps, emotional breakdowns, major mood swings, crying outbursts over small situations, night sweats, lack of motivation, weight gain, ADHD, wishing he were dead and the list goes on. His younger brother has always been involved in sports but he was always too afraid he would get hurt. This medication has robbed my 10 yr old son from 6 yrs of his childhood. Since he has been off Singulair he feels motivated and looks forward to joining the football team his younger brother plays for. I look forward to meeting this new young man who for so long has been hiding behind this so called allergy medicine. I am so thankful to know that my son can look forward to a bright future without these side effects. God Bless you all who are going through this as well.

My 5 yr. old son suffered from the side effects of Singulair for close to 6 months. I can't imagine the rage I would feel if it were 6 years. I'm so happy for you that he's now off Singulair. Best Wishes!!!

My daughter 6yr old daughter has been on singulair since she was 4yrs old. She too, has been emotional most of her life. I recently have noticed in the past year a more emotional state of wanting to be alone and many many mood swings. Along with emotional breakdowns over the smallest situations has really made me more concerned with what could possibly be making this happen or what could have happened to her to make her act out in this way. After hearing about the singulair side effect of suicide I have been so concerned with her outbursts. Being a girl and everything that the female gender has to go through from adolescence to PMS to boys and mean girls this whole idea of suicide being noted as a simple side effect just terrifies me! When you decided to take your son off of the singulair, did you check with his pediatrician or is this something that you decided to do at home as a trial basis? If you did talk with the pediatrician has the doctor offered other medications that may work? My daughter is an asthmatic, but only has major problems when she becomes ill with chest congestion and her allergist stated that being on the singulair is what helps her not to have to use her inhaler on a regular basis. I am torn on what to do. I don't want my daughter to constantly have to use her inhaler and feel like she can't breathe, especially because we just signed her up for baseball this year and she is so excited about it. In the same aspect I don't want that little voice in my head one day to say well I told you so. Please email me back and let me know more about how you took your son off of the medication. My name is Theresa and my email address is tjleal2000@yahoo.com. Thank you so much for posting this information. I am certain that there are so many more moms like me asking for answers and suggestions. Thank you again

My son is 7 and has been on Singulair since he was 5. Also, afraid of getting hurt playing sports, unmotivated, depressed at times, moody, crying, and stomach aches. Just recently got glasses for farsightedness and headaches. I am wondering if this has been caused by these meds. he has always been extremely happy and outgoing with a lot of laughter until these meds. I am stopping them tonight. Thanks for your post. HJ

Well, I just got done writing a book on my son's history on Singulair and somehow lost it so I am going to try and make this one short. My son is 10yrs old and has been on Singulair since he was 4. He has had sleep problems since I can remember. He has mood swings, argumentative, night sweats. A few months ago, he was trying to punch bad thoughts out of his head. His dad yelled at him so was thinking he wanted to hit his head with an ax to see blood squirt out. He wanted to die. He is contantly saying he hates his life. He has said he wishes he never existed. I've taken him to a phsychiatrist and they said it was obsesive behavior. He is on celexa for anxiety, adderal for ADD and they were talking about putting him on a sleep medicine. Reading your stories is so scary to think that a lot of other people are having the same problem. I too have been thinking non stop about what could be wrong with my son. When I saw it on the news about singulair, I was relieved because finally, something to explain what my son is they way he is. When I would get him up in the morning, I would feel horrible to see him so tired and than to send him off to school. My 7 year old daughter is on it too now and I have noticed a change in her behavior also. She has complained of nightmares and her behavior is not as sweet as she was. She crys alot. I have taken them off since 3/26. I haven't noticed a lot in my son yet. From reading others comments, it may take a few weeks. I am very angry and sad. Angry that no one told me about this. I have taken him to a number of doctors and even asked if it could be his medications. Nope. I am sad because 6 years of his life have been horrible for him. I am now afraid of what his other medications could be causing. He is on way too many and I need to find alternatives. The thing is though that most of those aren't covered by insurance and I can't afford it. Anyway, thanks everyone for sharing your stories. Good luck to everyone.

Many blessings to you all & sharing your experience... My story is too long & complicated, but at 50, a woman living alone with all the destruction of massive head injury... when I was 28... I had already lost 98%. I'm quite sure Singulair took the remaining 2% and that includes -me- any dream and all hopes for any kind of a life. I've been living a hell of an existence. I've been off it for a couple of days and really feel no change... yet. Again, I am so empathetic to all the anger, sadness and loss you all feel. I join you. I wish you all and your children a wonderful healthy future. losthope18

Was your son on meds for ADHD? I am curious because there seems to be a huge link here. I took mine off of singulair and I hope we can go off of the add meds too.

I'm not sure who b2bmommy is speaking too about whether the child was on meds for ADD but if you are talking to me, my son is on medication for ADD, he is on Adderal. I have notice a difference in his attitude since taking him off of Singulair. I can't wait to see if he even needs the medication for ADD. I will slowly monitor this to see how he is. I am taking my son to a Chiropractor now because now I am afraid of what is other medications he is on for Asthma might do to him when they tell me in the future. Of course I haven't taken him off of the Advair because he needs something but I am definately looking for alternatives.

Does anyone know if taking Singulair gives children permanent side-effects? Singulair robbed us of 3 years of a good life with our son. After being off Singulair since December, he is still having trouble focusing, and is hyperactive. Thankfully, he is now happier, not violent, and not anxious. Do you think the hyperactivity will go away, or is this permanent damage? I am so sick to my stomach thinking I poisoned my own child!
