I just started taking levothyroxine (a version of synthroid) and gained 2 pounds in a week, while eating 1,200 calories a day. I'm eating this low calorie diet to lose weight for the summer. Right before I went on the drug, I was losing about two pounds per week, as I typically do at this low calorie level. This means that my diet was exactly the same before and while taking the drug, and my weight shot up with the drug. After reading tons of posts from other women who said the same thing, I threw the bottle away in the trash. I have the luxury of doing this because I have borderline instead of low thyroid hormone, and I had only been on the drug for a week. I was reading that the T4 thyroid hormone that are in the thyroid drugs is converted to reverse-T3 in the body. Reverse-T3 may compete for binding sites with your body's natural T3 (the active form of thyroid hormone). This may inhibit your body's own T3 from being effective. This means that the best form of thyroid hormone would contain T3. I saw something like this in a Canadian online drug store, and maybe this would work better for people. At this point, I absolutely despise synthroid / levothyroxine.
I gained weight on synthroid / levothyroxine and absolutely hate it. I saw a better version of thyroid medication in an online Canadian pharmacy that contains T3 as well as T4. I think that the T4 variety of thyroid hormone (which is what's in typical thyroid medications) may be interfering with the body's own biologically active T3. A drug that contains T3 as well as T4 may be the way to go.
Sorry to read what you are going through. But I want to tell you that even what you call the old Synthroid was lousy. It's T4. T4 is simply a storage hormone and the body is NOT meant to live on a storage hormone alone. The thyroid makes not just T4, but T3, T2, T1 and calcitonin. Those are ALL in desiccated thyroid which is a FAR better treatment. One brand name is Armour; another is Naturethroid. I highly recommend www.stopthethyroidmadness.com I got OFF Synthroid because of this wonderful site and am now on Armour. And by the way, part of your problem is that you may now have adrenal fatigue, which is common for those who are on long-term Synthroid. Sad. It's also talked about on the stop the thyroid madness site.
I ran out of synthroid and I get it from PPA and Abbot was behind in getting it out. Being disabled I couldn't afford to get a prescription. I just put it in the Lords hands and was off it for a month; my dry skin disappeared and I felt better. I finally got the prescription from Abbot last week and after 4 days back on it, my feet are drying and cracking. I am going to stop this especially after reading your posts. My hair has thinned out and my eyebrows are gone. Will any of my hair return. I have heard about armour thryroid but don't think I can afford it and it wouldn't be covered by the PPA. Does anyone know what this costs to take? Thanks Mag
