personally, i will have a hard time trusting a clinical trial conducted by merck. i hope there will be non-merck researchers overseeing this study. oversight by individuals who are not lining their pockets with singulair sale $$$$s or incentives would be a start. there is too much money changing hands in the pharma co. i believe merck hid these known side effects as long as possible.
After many hours of searching scientific databases, I have so far been unable to find any research that has been done on how Singulair (montelukast) affects the brain and brain function. So far, I have also found no funding opportunities for any researchers to study montelukast and the brain. That does not mean that they don't exist, I just haven't located any as of today.
I personally believe that this is a consumer BEWARE situation. I personally would not take this drug after seeing for myself how little we can find out about how it interacts with brain chemicals. The FDA needs to require drug companies to study how medications affect the entire body not just one area. Human beings aren't just a nose and a pair of lungs. And we can't keep going around to different doctors to try to find a fix for a medication that is screwing up other parts of our bodies.
Concernedcitizen, I REALLY appreciate the hard work you've done looking for how montelukast affects the brain. I think you're making an important point here. Everything we put in our bodies affects other parts of our bodies and I think these research companies forget that sometimes. You can't fundamentally alter a bodily function and expect the rest of the body to ignore it.
The scariest thing to me is that rather than removing the antagonist (in this case, Singulair), doctors will prescribe yet another drug. So many of these children are on a multitude of medications. What a mess.
This registry is a place to share positive or negative side effects of using Singulair. If you directly experienced a side effect while using Singulair, then we encourage you to enter it here. Please note that entries here are the experiences of individual users, and in no way means that you or anyone else will experience the same side effect, since the same medication affects people in different ways. Please always contact your physician.
