I am one of many that has decided to stop giving my child Singulair. And like many others, I have noticed a great improvement in her behavior. My question is for those who have done the same. What medication have you replaced the Singulair with and have you noticed any of the same side effects that Singulair was causing? What are your thoughts on Flovent inhaler? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, My 11 year old son has been on both the Singulair and the Flovent 44mg inhaler since he was 3. He's been off the Singulair for about a month now. So far, he is doing well with just the Flovent. He also takes Zyrtec, which I may switch to Claritin. We were already considering taking him off the meds (before the reports came out) this summer, because the doctor believed he was growing out of the asthma. I hate to advise. I really don't know if Flovent alone will be enough for every child. The combination of the two worked well for controlling the asthma. I have a friend that removed the Singulair from her child years ago. She claim it made him wild. Anyhow, she takes him to a chiropractor several times a month to treat his asthma. Just a thought. Good Luck.

Hi I recently stopped taking Singulair and I have been searching for a replacement. I tried Claritin but it didn't last 24 hours like it was supposed too. I have tried Flonase along with other nose sprays but found these to be eye and nose irritating. My recent favorite it OTC daytime zyrtec. But everyone's different- trial and error is my best advice.

Hi, I was the post whose 3.5 year old was in the ER 2x in 5 days (April 1 post) which is how he was prescribed Singulair and posted that I decided to take him off it on my own b/c of his drastic personality change, stomach pain and leg pain and after removing him from it saw my child back again!

He was also prescribed Clartin daily which is working fine however, he has only food allergies mainly with an allergy also to outdoor mold. Hope this helps!

we have gone back to the old tried and true Albuterol and Benedryl. If we catch it during the beginning stages of wheezing he's fine with these two treatments. He's been off Singulair since 2005.

Just FYI we had a bad experience with crazy behavior on Zyrtec too. Claritin didn't help him at all.

I took my 6 yr old son off of Singulair almost two weeks ago and noticed a major change. My doctor recommended that if taking him off the singulair did not reduce his anxiety that I should also take him of the Zyrtec and put him on Allegra 2x a day. She said that Allegra does not involve the central nervous system. So far coming off the Singulair has been terrific. He has no more anxiety about school.

My daughter is on only allegra 2x a day with nose spray when needed. She has only been off for 9 days and we haven't had problems yet. She was on Singulair for seasonal allergies.

My daughter has been on Allegra 2x a day and we have actually weened her to 1x a day. She has been allergy and asthma free for a full year with none of the side effects that Singular caused. Maybe 2-3 times in a year we give her a breathing treatment due to weather change. We live in Houston, Texas, and you never know what the weather will be from day to day. I thank god for Allegra, it has been our savior.
