Update...Today is the 11th day my 7 yr. old son has been Singulair free! He was taking it for "cold induced" asthma. He never had the typical asthma where he needed an inhaler. He got RSV when he was almost 3, then whenever he got a URI it seemed to go straight to his lungs, so the dr. prescribed Singulair and Xopenex (to be used with a nebulizer). I had asked the dr. a few times to take him off Singulair because he seemed to be doing much better and I wanted to see how he would do without it. The dr. would say "oh, let's wait until summer or let's wait until allergy season is over" and kept putting it off. I just had some sort of bad "feeling" about it. Of course, I look back now and know with certainty that his wierd behaviors started around the time he started Singulair. I am relieved now because his erratic behaviors are almost totally gone!!!! When I heard the news I decided to take him off the Singulair immediately. I was nervous because he had a cold and a bad cough, but did it anyway. You know what? He is fine! His cough is almost gone now without the help of Singulair! He is much happier and can actually focus on doing his homework without getting up from his chair until he is done. Before he would get up about 10 times and just couldn't sit still. He has a better attitude about everything now! He is doing great! I hope everyone who was taking this and stopped is doing better! I learned a valuable lesson from all this. I won't put him or my other son on anything until I research it! I will not trust anything anymore, and that in itself is sad, but true. Good luck to all!

Dear Laura Seely,
Your story sounds just like mine. My daughter was hospitalized 2 years ago for an asthma attack that came on suddently without any prior history of breathing problems. She was 5 years old at the time. They said she also had pneumonia and sinusitis. Since then she's been taking singulair most of the time although I did stop it at certain times like last summer for 2 months while she was out of school. I restarted it at the doctors recommendation when she started the new school year last August and she had been taking it regularly ever since. However I kept asking her doctors if I could stop it and see how she did without it since in my heart I didn't think she needed a daily medication. Her doctors all recommended that I keep giving it to her. So I did out of fear of another asthma attack and hospitalization. I had been following the post on this website for a few weeks before the story broke in the news about singulair and suicide risk so I knew about the potential side effects. I had spoken to her pulmonologist about taking her off again and she told me to do so when she was on spring break and away from school. Well she's been off for about 8 days now and so far so good. She also had been recovering from a bad cold and cough when she stopped taking it so I was nervous. Although she never experienced the emotional/mental side effects that many have posted about I figured I better stop this med before she does. Anyway she has an appt. with her pulmonologist next week and hopefully all will be okay.

millenka...That's wonderful that your daughter never had the side effects and I think you made the right decision taking her off it anyway. There are other things you can give her if she absolutely needs something for her symptoms. Best of luck to you and your daughter!
