Thank you so much for all the information! My son was prescribed...

Thank you so much for all the information! My son was prescribed Singulair pills this fall. He has been taking them for seasonal allergies and we had no problems. These were the sample chewable kind. Then came the pills... Unfortunately I did not see the news or read the article about the side affects of Singulair. Within 4 days my happy well adjusted 10 year old had serious sleeping problems along with stomach aches. He will wake up screaming and crying and cannot tell me what is wrong. He said he had a nightmare but doesn't remember what it was about. My husband was away on a business trip when I started him on the medicine. He came back to a very unhappy and sleepy child. I asked my son what he was scared of and he asked me to tell daddy that he does not feel safe while he is out of town. He can't sleep unless he is by one of us. He's not safe. His bedroom is 15' from our bedroom! He loves his doctor and begged that I call Dr. Becky so he can talk to her. I could not take this anymore and started thinking about what was wrong. I went through all his activities, friends he's played with, school problems, anything! Then it hit me, effects of Singulair! Wow, what an eye opener. Fortunately my husband did not have him take it this morning. He will not be going back to this medication. Ever! Thank you for the information once again. I hope everyone's child gets better. Everyone wants a happy well child. No child should have to go through this. They have enough pressure as it is without the meds making things worse. Maeri

Maeri, as all of us, you should see all of the side effects disappear within a few days. The stomach pains took about 3 days for my son. Keep us posted on his changes!

If I understand you correctly, you said that your son took the chewable Singular with no problems. Then you said within four days, he was having bad problems with the pill.

The chewable is 4 mg. and 5 mg. Which one did he take and how did he take it? How many times a day and when?

Did he take the 10 mg. pill? And when did he take it?

He took the 5mg this fall and is on the 10mg pill now. Huge difference! He even asked if he could take the chewable ones after he started on the pills. I knew something was wrong. He usually gets upset when my husband is out of town but when things were worse when he came home I knew there was something seriously wrong.

Will keep everyone updated. Thank you for your concern.

Did he take the 5 mg. chewable - once a day in the fall? At what time of the day?

Did he take the 10 mg. pill - once a day recently? At what time of the day?

He actually took the chewables in the morning during the fall. The pills I had him taking in the morning also. Sometimes he would forget and I would have him take them at night before bedtime.

I am particularly interested in your experience because of the issue of possibly overdosing. The dosage does not have to be the same for everybody. So 5 mg. worked okay, but 10 mg. caused negative side effects.

I totally share your headache of dealing with an unhappy child. My 5 year old daughter has had asthma and when she visited grandmom during Dec'06, grandmom took her to see an out of town doctor. That doctor recommended singular pills for my daughter as a prevention. My husband and I were so naive; we should have read all about the side effects before started my daughter on the "soul-destroying" singular pills. She took a pill once a day for almost 2 years but about eight months ago, she started to have all kinds of behavior problems. She refused to listen to our requests, she strongly objected everything we recommended for her, she felt angry all the time, she cried at the slightest little things that bother her, she said she had bad dreams and refused to sleep in her bedroom, and sometimes she woke up in the middle of night crying hysterically for no significant reasons. It never crossed our mind the singular pills she was taking had put her in that horrible state. So many times my husband and I were at the end of our rope; thinking, our precious daughter must have ODD and needs help. 10 days ago we went to see a specialist and the specialist suggested taking her off the singular pills for 30 days and see what happens. Within 4 days of no pills, her behavior has transformed! We could see the changes happening in front of our eyes. She started to be more coorperating, does things the first time we asked of her, has not cried once in the last 6 days, no longer feels angry and begins to show more kind gestures toward her little brother and me, her momma who is currently 8.5 months pregnant. Hope no one else out there makes the same mistakes we did. We love our children dearly.
