Follow up to my post earlier today... I took the my son to the doctor this morning and he was somewhat dismissive of the recent reports on Singulair...says he's had a lot of kids on the drug and never heard a peep about side effects until last week when the report on suicidal tendencies showed up. He did advise that when these kinds of behavior changes happen after a new drug is started he would recommend that we stop taking the drug no matter what it was, but I still felt uncomfortable with his response to us. I felt like he was accusing me of making it up or only coming up with it because of recent news and message board posts. In fact, I made the appointment BEFORE I saw the posts. I was worried about his behavior BEFORE I saw the posts. It's just that seeing the stories from everyone else basically confirmed my suspicions that it might be the drug causing the problems. I feel like I definitely wasted OVER AN HOUR waiting for a doctor to spend five minutes making me feel small. Last night was the last time my son will take the drug, and I don't care what the doctors think of me.

I am not surprised to hear that. All of the reports that I found were from other countries. In other countries, hospitals, doctors and pharmacies report adverse drug reactions to the government agency. There is a communication break down some where.

It really stinks when doctors and other so-called "professionals" make us feel small about things that we have given closer consideration than they have! I had multiple conversations over a period of years with our pediatrician and allergist and was made to feel that my worries were unwarranted. My daughter has been off Singulair for 1 week now. It takes courage to do what you feel is right for your children. Good for you!

This story is interesting. In Europe, if a patient has a complaint, the doctor gets out a form and fills it out. If all US doctors have to hear from somebody else that they should file an ADR, then no wonder we have problems in this country.

our first pediatrician had a similar response. i ended up switching peds primarily because of my experience with singulair and their dismissive reaction when i told them my concern. it's not easy to change doctors in this town, either--they have this unwritten agreement that they won't take patients from each other's practices. the thing that irked me more than anything was that these doctors were all women with children. you'd think that would make them more sympathetic to a mother's instinct. it was the male pediatrician we switched to who finally took us seriously. you did the right thing. nevermind the doctor.

My daughter's pediatrician and GI doctor both were reluctant to believe Singulair could cause that many side effects. They make you feel like you are crazy. It is hard to believe parents have more knowledge than our own doctors!

I have an appointment with my doctor next week. Sometimes I get nervous because I think what happened to you will happen to me. But then I remember - I'm reporting to them -not asking them if they agree with me. Think about it - a doctor who says "I haven't heard about this before" and then hears it from you, can't really say that anymore! We are the reporters - we must come from a position of certainty - and they should be taking notes! I'm working to change my attitude from "asking around" to spreading the word. This is not easy to do in a doctor/patient relationship - we tend to want to defer to their expertise. But I think that it is clear with this drug that the system didn't work because we all trusted the system too much.

Anyway, keep spreading the word, everyone - don't give up!!

I have no idea what is going on. Why do people have to ask medical questions on the internet? I read a post yesterday about having a severe drug reaction that required Solu-Medrol. The person asked us if it was okay to continue his drug therapy. Hello, in the old days people, who worked for the Solu-Medrol company (me included) carried their own supply just in case the hospital hadn't ordered any. So it's hard to say what happened but it wasn't good and that guy is asking for advice on the internet.

My 8 year old daughter was put on Singulair 2 years ago. She suffered from the majority of side effects listed by so many other parents. In the course of two years we've been to an allergist, 2 pediatric GI doctors and an orthopedist ( because of severe leg pain). My daughter's personality completely changed. She was a very happy, well adjusted little girl who became sad, angry, and fatigued most of the time. My friend sent me this web site two weeks ago. As I read post after post I just cried. My daughter was being described perfectly. Eleven days ago I took her off Singulair. It was a miracle. She returned to her happy, peaceful self. Her appetite returned. She is able to go to sleep without Melatonin. She is happy and calm. Even her older siblings have commented on the change. I commend your commitment to doing what is best for your child. I wish you the best of luck.

You are not alone. Our pulmonologist was dismissive as well. Go with your gut feeling and if you have to change doctors. My daughter was having suicidal thoughts and has been in counseling for a while. I took her off singulair 10 days ago and see a definite improvement. Glad to hear your child is doing better as well.
