I am a 34 yr old mom of 2 and have had my Mirena for 4 and 1/2 years. I actaully have been having a great experience, but again, have the same weight gain issues with almost no loss, no matter what. MY BIG QUESTION: has anyone else experienced mysterious vaginal discharge and symptoms? Starting about a year ago, I began having mystery discharge and have been to 7 different doctors who have tested for everything under the sun, and FOUND NOTHING. they can see it, keep giving me yeast treatments. etc, but in 2 or 3 months, it is right back. There is a pungent fish odor, especially after sex with my hubby, which Dr's have been saying is normal... MAYBE NORMAL FOR THEM, not me!! I actually thought it was due to a lack of hormones now that my IUD is ending is life.. However, I did have a couple of crazy panic attacks, which I have never had, the dryness for sex and friction is intense, and my hair has been thinning, which I thought was just me... Can anyone let me know if you've had the vaginal symptoms... I know no one wants to talk about it, but I have to ask!!

I did not have discharge but I did have a funky odor on and off (mostly on) for the 5 1/2 months that I had the Mirena. It was enough to have an impact on my sex life. Now that I've had it removed, no more fishes. Lubrication became an issue for the first time ever. I also had anxiety/panic attacks for the first time in my life while I had the Mirena. This has also left the building. As these problems are gone since the Mirena has been gone, I can only attribute them to the Mirena.

Oh my! I thought I was alone until I decided to do some deep reading today. I can totally relate to this oder issue, it is so awful and embarrassing!!!! I had my IUD inserted in Feb. 2005 and in October 2007 I noticed an oder and went to the doc. They said I had a bacterial infection which was treated with antibiotics, which caused a yeast infection. So 2 antibiotics and a yeast cream later I still had a terrible oder. In the mean time I had my Mirena IUD removed in Nov. 2007, I thought maybe that could be my oder issue even though the doc said it couldnt be related. So Here it is April 2008, 5+ months of stench, and I saw the doc again this week. He found that I have an extreme amount of normal vaginal bacteria, which seemed to puzzle him. He gave me an antibiotic cream and said it should resolve the issue, if not he said he will need to be extremely aggressive and involve more experts to figure out the problem. Now that I know I'm not alone with an oder issue with and without my Mirena IUD I will keep you posted.

My discharge was not as bad as what you describe but it was much more than I was used to and also smelled worse/stronger than what I was used to.... I felt like I needed to change my underwear a couple times a day and the smell made me want to take a shower a couple times a day too. I've had my mirena gone for a month now and my body odor is back to normal as well as normal discharge (barely any).

I too, recently had an awful fishy smell after intercourse.
It ended up being a bacterial infections. And the more you try to treat it with the OTC treatments the worse it get. Ask you doctore for Flagyl.
It works. My Dr. said it was because of the IUD. It has been 3 months for me. And I am getting mine removed on Tuesday. I am so glad. I have been going through some horrible side effects. And the infection was the icing on the cake for me. It not pleasant...I just felt so dirty...not matter how many hot showers. Well, good luck with your situation.
Oh by the way...12lbs gained in 3 mnths. I run 2x per week. Walk 3x per week and stick to a low cal diet of 1400 calories. Same age as you. Just kept gaining lbs. Something to consider...

OK.. So after some reading I am a little mad that I didn't do my research before getting this thing! I got my Mirena in August 2007 and have been having complications. Number 1: I have the worst cramps ever and they can get so bad it is hard to walk. Number 2: It seems like I ruin more panties with all the spotting of old Nasty BLOOD! Number 3: I too am starting to experience the odor and it is so embarrassing (I never feel clean!!!). Number 4: My sex drive is almost non-existent and it is taking a toll on my marriage (I do not even crave intercourse) I tried to talk to the doctor two weeks ago about it and they said I needed a appointment. So, I have been researching to see what others are saying about "Mirena"
I am not sure what I am going to do yet.. My family is moving overseas in about a month and this had a great impact on my decision about Mirena.Has anyone kept Mirena in for the whole 5 years? Does it ever get better?

It's wierd that your Dr says a smell is normal!? Usually abnormal smell means infection.....I DID get extremely thick and sticky clear discharge at some point in my cycle. Thick like phlegm almost but clear. And it would be sticky, like if I wiped it would stretch and stick everywhere. I just got the iud removed two weeks ago so I'll see if it continues. Definitel never had it PRE Mirena.

I also get that nasty odor. I have mentioned it to the doctors and they see nothing wrong. I had an IUD before and same problem, it's actually why I took it out. I needed birth control and decided to try it again, but I am only 3 weeks into this, and the odor has resurfaced! I am positive it has something to do with the IUD.

I have experienced the discharge also. I have been tested for every possible infection and all tests are negative. I constantly have this really thick discharge with the foul odor. I want to shower several time per day, but with 2 kids, who has the time? I have had all of the other side effects that everyone else has posted. I am going to call my Dr. to have this thing removed. Hopefully it won't be too painful!!

Hi, the peculiar discharge with a fishy odour is most likey Bacterial Vaginosis. It's a bacterial infection, but it's cause by too many natural occurring bacteria, so this may be why no test has shown what it is. It's cause by an imbalance within you vaginas natural PH, on this site http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/23068687/ it states that "One study found that about half of women using an intrauterine contraceptive device had at least one episode of BV over a two year period." Metronidazole can be used to treat it. I hope that was of some help to you.

I have had the odor/discharge after sex. It hasn't been every single time so I wonder if it corresponds to certain times in my cycle.

I had the mirena placed in October 2008 - I have this burning discharge that makes sex very uncomfortable. Now that I have been reading these posts I am going to make an appointment with my doctor to have it removed. I am getting tired of feeling like my vagina is on fire for the acidic discharge. It never goes away. I can only attribute this side effect to the mirena since that is the latest change. Before the mirena I bled like a stuck pig - continuously. I don't know what I will do after, I really don't want to get a hysterectomy, but that might be my only option right now.
