After reading more posts and comments to others re: SINGULAIR and discussion of side effects of steroids - I am really scared as you could all imagine! Do I need to look for any side effects from the flovent and albuterol? What should Iook for? I am so not the paranoid type but am quickly becoming more now b/c I don't want my son to suffer anymore. I know predisone long term but what about the flovent which is a steroid? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My son uses these inhalers and so far I haven't noticed any problems. However, my daughter had a nightmarish experience with Levalabuterol (also known as Xopenex which is a form of albuterol) and Pulmicort which was given in nebulizer treatments. The pediatrician prescribed Xopenex because the side effects are suppose to be less severe than abuterol. She wanted her on the meds. 2X a day for 6 wks. We lasted 4-5 days. The side effects were unbelievable- loss of appetite, descreased desire for liquids, temper tantrums, constant whining and violent outbursts. At one point she went 12 hrs. without urinating. At night she would do one of two things: cry until she fell asleep and then jerk and twitch for 2-3 hours OR cry until she fell asleep and then wake up screaming 2-3 hours later. When she woke up, we could not console her. She seemed lost and fearful of us and even tried to smack us if we so much as touched her. It was an absolutely awful experience and she will NEVER take these meds. again unless it's a life threatening experience. When I contacted her pediatrician she brushed off my concern and said "Three year olds have temper tantrums." I took her to MY doctor and he said "They can cause these side effects in adults, so I'm sure they can in children too." We tried to figure out if the Xopenex or Pulmicort was the problem by administering them to her one medication at a time. What we discovered was that one was responsible for the jerking, twitching and whining and the other caused the aggression and nightmarish screaming in the middle of the night.
P.S. We loved our pediatrician and we still visit the same office. However, we now always request one of the other pediatricians! I may not be a doctor but I know what is normal behavior for my child.
