An important thing to ask if why your grand daughter took Singulair. What was the diagnosis?
Do you honestly believe Cody's mom? Don't you think she is just looking to lay blame somewhere other than her own lap?
There are Millions of people who take this drug without side effect, myself included. Everyone's body is different and therefore reacts differently to anything we introduce into it. This can be anything from medication, to food, to health supplements. If someone has a seafood allergy it doesn't make seafood unsafe, it's simply a bad choice for those individuals with an allergy.
Many common drugs have side effects listed that might lead to suicidal tendencies in the wrong individual. For example over the counter Zyrtec lists : abnormal thinking, agitation, amnesia, anxiety, depression, emmotional liability, insomnia, nervousness, paranoia, and sleep disorder, under is list of adverse events which have occured. It doesn't make this product unsafe, it's just something to be aware of so that one may take appropriate action if such a side effect should occur. Every single medication we buy can have side effects some of which are mild, others are severe. It is our job as consumers and parents to be aware of those possible side effects, and act accordingly if a known or unknown side effect seems to present it's self. Most people feel that a product like Benedryl (which is known for making you drowsy) works well enough to justify taking the medication despite the side effect.
The bottom line is while we certainly depend on our physicians to make safe and educated choices when it comes to prescibing medications. It is ultimately OUR responsibility as a parent or patient to take appropriate action (ie. stop taking the drug or call the prescriber) if there seems to be a unwanted or abnormal side effect to a prescribed medication.
Everyone wants to blame someone else (the drug companies are an easy target) but no one wants to take responsability for their own actions or inactions. It's the same reason that people sue McDonalds because they're fat. Of course it's McDonalds fault, not the fault of the people who choose to eat there 5 days a week.
For the millions of people who take a drug like Singulair without issue because it relieves our Allergy symptoms, and more importantly our Asthma symptoms, the drug is a mirical worker. For myself it's the difference between using my inhaler daily because I can't breathe, and using it possibly 1x-2x per week. It is truely unfortunate that a FEW people have had adverse reactions of some sort. If so, the answer is simple stop taking it!!!
If the people who are allergic to Penecillin all demanded that it be taken off the market, the vast majority of people who don't have an issue would be without a great antibiotic. Use common sense!! If you use any medication and it doesn't seem right stop taking it!!!!!
