I have read many posts about Adderall XR side effects, and wondered if anyone has found another medicine that works better for them. My 12 year old daughter is taking 20mg/day of Adderall XR. It definitely helps her tremendously in focusing at school, but the side effects are just too much. (she has huge mood swings, verbal tics, compulsive hair plucking, etc.) We need an alternative ASAP. If you have something else that you recommend, please let me know. Thanks!

Hi Karl

I was wondering how you made out at the counsellors for your daughter. I hope she is doing better. Has she managed to stop pulling her hair? Have you tried taking her off the Adderall?

Please let me know.

Rhonda

I am 23 years old, and adderall also helps me immensely through my education. However, I am only taking 10 mg XR a day! My brother, 25, is also only prescribed 10 mg XR a day. Both of us began taking the drug when we started our undergraduate studies, and were started on higher dosages. Both of us experienced the typical side effects (mood swings, depression, anxiety), causing us to request a reduction in our dosage. That made a world of difference! We are both side effect free! As he is completing medical school, and I am about to finish law school, we are working ourselves off of the drug through strict behavior management.

Speak with your doctor about reducing your child's dosage. That should aid in reducing their side effects. If you are no longer interested in keeping her on the drug, I recommend seeking counseling for behavior modification, but that may be difficult for a 12 year old to grasp, but it is worth a try for her long term well-being. Yes, adderall works miracles, but who wants to be dependent on a drug for the remainder of their educational career, or even the rest of their lives?
