I was put on Yaz (same as Yasmin but with a smaller estrogen dose) due to irregular periods and a presumed hormonal imbalance. That was in September '07. Four month later, on Jan 1, '08, I went to the ER with breathing difficulties, and weakness in my arms and legs. I had been having muscle cramps/ charley horses in my right calf, but that was the only other health problem I had experienced. I thought I was having an asthma attack. So did the ER - at first. After I did not respond to the breathing treatments, and I became completely out of breath and exhausted after walking across the hall to the restroom, the ER doc checked my D-Dimer level to see if I was at risk for blood clots. He said if it came back over 500, he would have to do further testing for clots. It came back 4500!! I was sent immediately down for a CT Scan which showed mulitple clots in both lungs, mostly small, but several of significant size. I was immediately put on oxygen and a heart monitor, and an IV drip of heparin was started. I was in the hospital for 4 days, had to learn to give myself shots of Lovenol in my stomach until my pill form of blood thinner had time to kick in. I am now taking Coumadin blood thinner every day until July, when my D-Dimer will be checked again. Depending on the results, I may come off the Coumadin, or I may have to commit to it for 3 years. However, I was tested for all the hereditary blood clotting disorders and all came back negative, so my doctor feels as though the cause has to be the YAZ! Everyone tells me I was very lucky and that I could have easily died, especially when I was just thinking I was having an asthma attack and put off going to the ER for a few days. If you are taking Yaz or Yasmin, and you begin to have difficulty breathing, any kind of leg cramps, weakness, or tightness in your chest (I had also been having severe heart burn) - go have yourself checked out!!!!!

Been on Yaz for 1 month. The reason I was put on it was to help with PMDD .... Now I am having heartburn a lot, and a bit of nervousness. The bad side effect for me is that I get dehydrated a lot as it is (before yaz) I just cannot make myself drink much fluid. This past week I was so weak I couldn't get out of bed I felt like I had the flu without the "flu symptoms" just that very weak achy part. My right kidney started getting really bad pains in it. I drank lots of fluid ..only to try and get rid of the pain, and my kidney quit hurting. However the thing that is bothering me right now is, LEG CRAMPS!! I stepped down off a chair (hanging a picture) and it felt like my leg muscle tore and was cramped...this was in the upper part of my leg, center thigh.... I assumed It was from stepping out of the chair and I must have stretched it. However today I was walking in Wal-Mart and the OTHER leg did the same exact thing in the same exact place..no strain at all was put on my leg...still in pain from it, and I believe it is from the Yaz. I took my last pink pill today, and not going to take them anymore... oh yeah 2 other side effects..NO sex drive and my breasts are very very sore!!! Thank you for your post, it has helped me make a decision.

My 15 year old daughter was put on Yaz about 6 months ago. For Polycystic ovaries. Three days ago (this was Wednsday) she was complaining of rapid heart rate, tightness in her chest, like she was having a heart attack. Weakness in legs. I took her to the peidatrician, thought maybe it was the high energy drink mountain dew she drank the night before. Sent us home said it should pass, call if it contiues. The next day the school nurse called me said she had been to see her at least seven times today feeling that way. I called the pediatrician she said go to the ER so we did. They run all kinds of test, basically grilling her as if she had taken drugs or something. Her Ddimer test come back at almost 700. Now we are nervious. They said they think it possible clot due to birthcontrol. They done a ct scan and see a Pneumothorax 1.5cm then they do chest x-ray see the same thing. Give her meds to calm her down. They send us home to followup with pediatrician, this is saturday now, the doctor see us on a saturday, see all the paperwork and immediatley sends us to Texas Childrens Hospital. They did no blood work, nor did they bother to look at the ct scan on a disk the the other ER sent with us, they just want to do a reg chest x-ray and find nothing, tell us she just had panic attackes and told her how to breath. Said that if she had something on her lung its disolved now. I was so frustrated when I left there. This is supposed to be the best Hospital for children. And acted like all this was in her head. My daughter is never sick. I can't beleive something that was there is now gone. He would not run the ct scan due to he said it is more dangerous to put her through that again too soon. I know if he would have ran that test he problaly would of found the spot. So now my child is labeled with a panic disorder. Any answers you can give me please would be most appreciated. We go back to our pediatrician on Monday. Our OBGYN is who prescribed the Yaz. I am so worried about my baby girl. No-one is taking her syptoms serious. Thanks in advance for your help.

Mikki
