If the OCD behavior is related to the Singulair (which I don't doubt), it could certainly take longer than a week to improve. Even if the Singulair triggered the behavior, it is learned and needs to be unlearned. This is not an instant process. You could tell your daughter what a good job she has done (while wiping - as if you see that she if finished), to put the idea in her head. Good luck. Report back when it improves.
She's too young to label her as OCD. Many preschool age children get "stuck" on a certain obsession. I teach preschool so my advice is to reassure her that she is clean and she is ok and leave it at that. Sometimes drawing too much attention to something makes it linger on. Hope she forgets about it soon. My friend who is a pharmacist said to expect it to take 6 weeks or so before side effects will be completely gone from a med. Hang in there!
One more thing-it might help to redirect her to a new activity immediately after she uses the restroom. Kids this age are easily distracted. Suggest something that she enjoys doing with you. Maybe playdough , a fun art project, or even a tea party. Hopefully she will be better soon.
It could be something as simple as urine irritation if it happens after urination. I'd try something like vagisil for a while to see if she just has a burning feeling and doesn't know how to make it stop.
We, too, are battling obsessive compulsive behavior. In our case it is touching the head, from the hair down to the mouth, then the body from the feet up, and then both arms. Constantly and always in the same way. This behavior came out of nowhere, started from one day to the other. Our son is 6, and he had been on Singulair for over 3 years. We stopped giving Sinulair almost 3 weeks ago, and I have seen improvement overall (less aggression, happier, more positive outlook, does not always cry at the drop of a hat etc), but the "tic" has not changed much. I have hope that b2bmommy is right that it will take "only" 6 weeks to get the med out of the system, and then maybe this rather irritating behavior stops. I am glad someone else mentions obsessive compulsive behavior because I felt we were alone with that.
Our 11 year old son has been off Singulair for about a 5 weeks now, and while I started to observe improvement after about week 3, it is really only in the last week that I have begun to feel my son is truly, entirely back. In fact, the worst of it (his suicidal notes) occurred a week to 10 days after he got off the medication, so it is clear it was still in his system and affecting him deeply. The turn around now is stunning and ummistakable. I didn't realize how far from his "normal" self he had drifted over the past 4 plus months.
Have patience. I hope for all the best for you and your child.
Hi, My 7 yr,old had OCD symptoms also. She has been off singuliar for 3 weeks now.She started "over wiping" also. The doctor had checked for UTI but there was none.I have seen a little improvement with the wiping. But,I too believe it will have to be unlearned now.I note, she was not obsessive before the singuliar.
my son chewed the neck of his t-shirts,i have noticed a HUGE improvement in his behaviours, but when he is quiet still that t-shirt goes in his mouth
