I had my first Mirena coil fitted about 10 years ago and though it had been fantastic. No worries about getting pregnant and no periods. I had take the pill before and had ovarian cysts removed so I couldn't use the pill. However, my second Mirena only lasted 31/2 years before I notice problems. I had a new one fitted and it had been ok for 3 years. Or so I thought. 18 months ago I became very ill with chronic fatigue, sickness, severe depression for which I was prescribed Prozac and then I developed Irritable bowel syndrome. I felt like I was going nuts. Nobdy believed how I felt. My job is at risk. I had a new mirena fitted a few months ago and the problems had eased although I feel that they are now getting worse again. I am considering having it removed. I hadn't made the link between the Mirena coil and my illness until recently. I have also gained a considerable amount of weight but I also had this when I was on the pill. Has any one had problems after using the Mirena for a number of years? as most people seem to have trouble straight away.

I had the Mirena for 2 1/2 years, but no symptoms until the last 6-9 months. I loved it at first! When the symptoms started it was like someone flipped a switch - then all of a sudden I was tired and lazy, back pain, joint pain, gained 2-3 pounds a month, always bloated, looked and felt pregnant all the time, hair loss, really foggy brain and zero libido. I've had it out just over a month and am generally feeling tons better! Back pain gone, joint pain improving, bloating gone, much better mood, much more motivated, sex drive back! I got headached and most mirena symptoms back for a few weeks around my period, but i heard a lot of women say that it could happen and that it could take 4-6 months to get back on track. good luck!

i just wish i had looked into the terrible side effects the merina caused. I am putting on heaps of weight, now on tablets for panic attacks, which I am sure is caused because of the merina, I have no ankles by night time because of terrible water retention, my hair is now falling out over the last couple of weeks. I am also so irritable . I was at docs yesterday who refused to say my symptoms was caused by the merina he has taken blood tests but I just want it removed but scared in case I bleed heavily as going on hols soon. I will keep you posted. Angie
