I suggest to anyone that has Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (type of Hypothyroidism) to have a blood test done for Celiac Disease. There has been research done linking Celiac Disease and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Celiac Disease can be controlled by a gluten-free diet (wheat, rye, and barley free). In the US, not many doctors recognize/know of this link. I have been hypothyroid for 20 years (had Hodgkin's Disease (cancer) - radiation/chemo at age 16) I have 2 sisters with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and were iron and B12 deficient. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis 3 months ago with iron and B12 deficiency. I have been on a gluten-free diet for 2 months now. My dosage of synthroid (levothyroxine) was 175 mcg and now is down to 137 mcg. I hope that I am one of the lucky ones that will have their antibodies to their thyroid normalized (no more synthroid!) I have a couple of days left before my next blood test and I hope that it goes down more. I am feeling better now than I have in a very long time. I have attached a link for those of you interested. It is an endocrine article from Finland outling the link between Celiac Disease and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (among other things). I hope that this helps some of you. http://edrv.endojournals.org/cgi/content/full/23/4/464

I have now been taken off of the thyroid medication. I had something similar to a 'small' thyroid storm (too much thyroid medication) when my medication was lowered again. I am too be off for 3 weeks and have another blood test done. Essentially went from .175 mcg down to NOTHING in a matter of a few months. (was hyperthyroid with the .175 for a few months - though I had been between .200 mcg and .150 mcg for 20 years). This may be where either my thyroid quits from exhaustion or it will normalize out (Remember, I had radiation to the neck besides the Hashimoto's). I am feeling better after the initial hyperthyroidism that happened. My hives from the extra Synthroid have went away. The tremors from the hyperthyroid this weekend have went away as well. I guess now is just a wait and see! Also, I suggust to anyone that is looking at Celiac Disease and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis to be sure and take a GOOD multi-vitamin. I was on one for about 8 months before I started the Gluten-free diet (even though I was still deficient in iron and B12 - I was that bad!). I am no longer iron or B12 deficient since starting the diet and taking extra prescribed iron and B12. Also, when doing something like this, it is very important to be seeing a doctor that is measuring your thyroid levels during this time. Thyroid storms can be dangerous. My was not. Good luck.

I was just diagnosed with Hashimotos about 5 months ago. The doctor I was seeing diagnosed me with depression at first and started me on medication that made my entire body feel like it was on fire. I was sent to a psychiatrist and my internist told me that he did not believe that I was feeling all the symptoms that it was all in my head. My heart racing, my blood pressure going up, anxiety to the point that I couldn't drive. I changed doctors and by the Grace of God he listened to my symptoms and after doing several test I was sent to an endocrinologist and was dx with Hashimoto. What worries me now is that I am on Synthroid and started with the headaches, I fall asleep at any time of the day, and have no energy. I know and want to do my daily chores but it is very difficult for me without energy. My doctor also tells me I am very anemic. My other concern is that my dad was now dx with lymphoma and I was reading that Celiac Disease is also somehow connected with lymphoma. What do you know about that?
