My experience and a question... Hello all, I had mine placed 6 days ago. First 2 days were a little painful. But I was able to go to school and work (in my final year of college and am having a hard enough time in Calculus without missing a day). I have been on many different kinds of birth control (patch, pill, and shot). My problem is I suffer from severe migraines. At the worst point in my life, they were 3-5 times a week. The patch worked the best for me. I lost weight, periods didn't change at all, migraines went to 2-4 a month and I (still to this day) have never really experienced cramps. However, because of the cost and my financial situation at the time, I couldn't afford it. The shot was the worst. Gained 10 pounds every 3 months, very emotional and depressed all the time, and the migraines slowly became more frequent. Changed to the pill (Kariva) and took it so that I only had a period every 3 months. My migraines almost went away completely but I had a lot of lower abdomen pain. Had every test under the sun and they found nothing wrong. My doctor suggested changing my birth control so here I am. My question is are there any signs of complications from the placement of Mirena? About once a day or more I get a sharp pain in my lower left side. Not sure if this is just the same pains I had from the pill (didn't take anything for birth control for 2 months and all the pain stopped. didn't start up again till placement) or if others have experienced this when something was wrong. I am scared they may be something wrong but being a broke college student, don't really have $100 to spend at the doctor to have the usually *shrug*. Thanks! email ******

You may start gettting your migraines back from the hormones in Mirena. They are the same hormones as are being used in the shots. Doctors tend to say that the hormone levels are only local or too low, but they do enter the blood stream within 15 minutes after it has been placed.
So if you start getting them again, please have your doctor take it out.
You may find more info about migraines and Mirena in the Bayer product monograph, there is a strong warning about women who have a history of migraines.
The monograph can be found here, please read through all the side effects carefully:

Take care

I forgot to mention that the sharp pain may be caused by an ovarian cyst. About 10-12% of Mirena users develop these cysts. Most of them go away on their own, but sometimes women need surgery to remove them. I am one of those women unfortunately.

Take care,

Claudia

Hi,
I had my Mirena placed just over 3 weeks ago. I kept having the same type of pain on my lower left side several times a day. It wasn't severe, but I was really concerend so I mentioned it to my doctor when I went in a week later for the ultrasound to check the Mirena placement. At that time they noticed a small ovarian cycst, but they thought it was just due to ovulation. I went back a week later for another ultrasound and mentioned the pain was still coming several times a day. At that point they found the cyst had doubled in size. Now I'm not allowed to do any physical activity until I go back for another ultrasound next week for fear that my ovary could twist with the cyst. They say it's not related to the Mirena, but it's a big coincidence. I would make sure you get an ultrasound to check for a cyst.

I also just got my period (only 25 day cycle). I have horrible breast tenderness, have gained a bra size, and I'm retaining so much water it's ridiculous. Has anyone else experienced this on Mirena and if so, did it go away over time like the brochure promises?
