Our son was put on Singular almost 2 years ago to help with his "moderate" asthma. It has been the hardest 2 years for our family. My son who was already very senstive became very depressed. He showed no interest in anything. He was always sad and very down on himself. He had awful night terrors/nightmares. He didn't want to go to school or do anything. We continued to sign him up for sports/piano/scouts and it was a battle to get him to go. He always had headaches, which I thought were because of dehydration and made him drink water. We had him seeing a therapist trying to help him with the sleeping problems and the depression. We switched his room with his sister to physically make him closer to us at night. He was anxious and very irritable. If something went wrong, he couldn't handle it and had complete meltdowns. If he didn't eat anything for a while and his blood sugar got low, he was uncontrollable. To add to the problem was he was never hungry so I would have to force him to eat something about every 2-3 hours to prevent the meltdown. The good news is that he has been off of Singular for over a month now and he is a new kid. He is excited to go to practice and will ask his dad to play catch with him in the yard. He is happier and we have not heard once "this is the worst day ever" which we had heard all the time before. He has not had one headache and seems to have a little bit of his appetite back. He is happy and holding his head high. Now, he still doesn't want to go to school (what 8 year old boy does), but he doesn't fight me when I tell him it is time to go. He does not have the meltdowns or the irritability. He even showed some empathy to my husband last week. My husband and I are amazed at how different he is. We are also very upset that for almost 2 years we made his life miserable by forcing him to take this drug. I think for kids that are already sensitive to things it heightens everything! I am filing a complaint with the FDA and spreading the news to all my family and friends. I hope this information helps! I know I have learned a lot from reading these posts.

Thank you so very much for your information!! Just yesterday....the day you posted this, it "dawned" on me that the problems we have seen with our son, who just turned 11 has had similar issues!! I had heard of the side effects with Singulair and it occured to me last night that possibly this could be causing some of the changes in our son. I just read your post this morning and it brought tears to my eyes. I just told my son and daughter last evening that we were going to try something new and go without Singulair for a while and see if they saw improvements! I can't thank you enough for your post and sharing your experience. I'm not a physician, but I know my son and I know that the past few years, he has been totally different. He just wants to sit and watch TV and play video games and no desire for anything! This is a kid who used to say his favorite place in the whole world was outside! Always getting broken arms from being so active! Thank you again!! Your information was very helpful!!

Denvermom,
Our situation sounds pretty much exactly the same. My son is also 7 almost 8 and had been on singulair for 1 1/2. He had the same side effects as your son. Isn't it crazy that a drug that is suppose to help our children was actually poisoning them! I am so glad you found this site, as glad as I was. We all need to work together to get this negative information out there. I hope your son continues to do good. Goodluck!!

My son is 6 and had been on it for apprx 3 1/2 years. Same type of side effects and last year since dose was upped things had gotten awful. He has been off it since 3-29 and is doing alot better. We finally figured out the cause of his constant sinus infections was the singulair. 9 days after coming off his sinuses finally drained. (we have been waiting 6-9 months for that to happen and even went through adenoid surgery) We have a support board for members here if you would like to join.

My son is 3 1/2 years old and was taken off of Singular about a month ago and while on it he was very down, depressed, did not want to do anything, nightmares. Now, taken off of it he is in a better state of mine and better mood, but now has a crying spells many times that he never has had before. Basically my son is having alot of the same symptoms your is having...Do you know anyone, like an attorney that is specializing in this affecting children.

It is interesting that you relate singulair to nightmares. I'm a 24-year-old woman and have been taking singulair a couple days and I was alarmed that I was having nightmares, causing me to jump out of bed. I usually don't even remember my dreams. Now that I've done some research and see there could be a relationship between singular and suicidal thoughts, I will definately stop taking the drug. I'm certainly a believer that this relationship could be valid, I hope the research in that direction will be thourough. It's odd how the mechanism of our body are so complex and unpredictable.
