I have two sons on Singulair, my three old was suspended today from pre-school for bad behavior. Screaming, biting, scratching, and hitting have been going on for the last few months. But worse the past two weeks. He has always been active and played like a boy, but he has been getting violent. We have tried positive reinforcement, praising good behavior both verbally and with rewards, I have tried time-out, being grounded, not being able to participate in activities, no t.v. and old fashioned butt spanking. All of this with no positive results. I am not looking for an excuse for my child's behavior, but could Singulair really be the cause of his aggression?

Hello stressoutmom,
Yeah, this story sounds a little too familiar! My son is 7 and had these same symptoms and more. How long has he been on this? Mine was on it for 1 year 5 months, for the fact that I thought his behavior was a normal "boy" acting like a little stinker. Which come on all boys at one point are stinkers! It wasn't until we did blood work and x-rays did we discover there was not anything physically wrong with him. It has been 3 weeks since taken off of singulair and he is the little boy I once knew! He is not violent, anger, moody, irritable and the list goes on. I was in complete shock that a medicine which was suppose to be helping him, was in fact poisoning him!! Keep us updated on what you plan on doing, I would like to hear your results. Good luck!

I called the pharmacy and the first prescription filled was at the end of January. After putting more two and twos together, he is also wetting his bed every night, which he was potty trained. He has had about 4 accidents at school (mostly while sleeping) in the last 6 months. I know accidents happen, in reference to the bedwetting and behavior, but this is just too much!

Have you found that since your child has been off of the medication, the aggression has stopped? I am worried that it will have become a habit, since it has been going on for a few months now.

My advice to you, is to stop the singuliar. Both my 7 & 8 yr. olds were on it for 3-5 yrs. Both of their behaviors were out of control. My husband and I took parenting classes, thinking WE were doing something wrong. After following all of the good advice we received, nothing changed. They were still disrespectful to us,extremely argumentative and very moody. They would cry at the drop of a hat. They both had low self images also.Only after STOPPING SINGULIAR did they improve. Its been 6 weeks now. They are so much better.Listen to your gut instincts.Good Luck!

I would quit the singulair and also be careful with the antihistamines as they have caused aggression in both of my boys as well. Unless my kids are having an allergic reaction to something I will not use anything but nasal sprays on them. Both my boys are much sweeter and less difficult now that they are off of the singulair.

This is what we have seen with our boys (three of them) - angry, rotten behavior. Our daughter became mean in non-physical ways. For years we tried everything and got nowhere. It's so frustrating!

My doctor said, do an experiment. Take the kid off the medicine and see what happens. Singulair is not a rescue drug - if this is an asthmatic child, you will still have your rescue medicines.

And it worked for us. There was nothing to lose, really. If there had been no behavior improvement, and the asthma came back, we'd just restart the Singulair.

One warning: no man is an island, and a family is a network of relationships. Our family network was built on angry interactions and avoiding negativity. We have had to make adjustments as the kids have gotten better. We've had to realize that we can ask once, sweetly, and the chore will get done (probably not with a three year old, however!). And the older kids - who were used to feeling like saints because the two younger ones were always so difficult - they feel displaced now, because the younger ones are making them look bad! I am confident we will all work through this, and you can too.

I hope removing Singulair helps you out, and allows you to avoid the chain of psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, ADHD medications, behavior charts and everything else that we have been through.

Thank you all so much for your information, I will make more posts to document if and how their behaviors change. I can tell you this much, tonight it was not good! We went out to dinner (for my birthday), I think we are banned from The Cheesecake Factory.

My son started nursery school at 3 and the first 3 weeks were fine. He started on Singulair at the end of Sept and immediately the teacher saw the difference. Back then the Dr's said no wasn't singulairr causing behavior problems.. Well by the end of Oct I removed him from the class as I did not wish him to have such a bad experience when it wasn't even required school yet. The last 3 1/2 years have basically been hell dealing with so many issues and not realizing they all boiled down to Singulair. He has been off since March 29 and our sweet lovable boy is coming back! The teacher is not even sending the progress sheets I used to get every day telling me he hit for no reason. The change is significant.
