I had a viral infection and was put on Levaquin 750 mg. After being on it for 5 days my joints began to hurt. I didn't think the medicine caused it and I continued to take it. Until the 7th day I began to research and found this web site. I quit taking it. I was unable to stoop down and it hurt really bad to walk up or down stairs. Regular walking was some painful. I also had some pain in my wrist. I've been off the medicine for 6 or 7 weeks and I'm still having bad joint pain in my knees. I'm unable to perform normal activities. I'm not saying Levaquin caused it; but it's just that when this started was while on it. If anyone knows how long this might last or if it causes permanent damage, please let me know! I will be going to a specialist in 1 week to get this checked.

First of all, I can't help wondering why your doctor treated a viral infection with any antibiotic since they only work on bacterial infections. Secondly, the joint pain is the most common side effect of this drug. The FDA has known since the 90's that it causes a decreased blood flow to tendons which softens them and makes them vulnerable to strains and tears. My cousin ruptured his achilles tendon after taking this drug and my husband sprained his knee and his thumb. I sprained my ankle and tore my rotator cuff after taking 750 mg for only 3 days. For me, the worst of it was over in about 4 months, and now at nearly 6 months, I'd say I'm symptom free.
I would only recommend that you take it easy for a few months--no strenuous activity other than brisk walks if you can and also make sure that your diet is very wholesome. No processed foods and preferably organic. Take supplements like multivitamins, extra C, MSM, and acai juice which you can get in most health food stores. If your doc prescribes Lyrica or any other "miracle drug" I'd research it very carefully before taking it My doc actually told me they didn't have time to check side effects of everything they perscribe, so it's up to you to do the detective work. Good luck to you and hang in there. It does get better.

I am sorry about your pain. My teenage son, who was in terrific condition before Levaquin, also has had joint issues (among other side effects). Since the knee pain was the least of the problems, we just had an MRI done on both knees (it has been 8 months since Levaquin when he developed knee pain that occurs when putting pressure on his knees, but he can walk around pain free). The MRI showed a hairline fracture in both knees. He is seeing an orthopedic specialist in a couple of weeks. You might have your knees checked out to see what type of damage (if any) might have occurred.
