Sometimes the body just causes this. Could be from diet or heredity. However, my two pre-teens were on singulair and they both had higher cholesterol readings than I thought reasonable (they are just beyond the top allowable # for normal range). We usually follow a low-fat diet controlled by home made meals (as opposed to pre-packaged/frozen meals) so I was surprised when I requested a cholesterol test and saw the high numbers come back. They are both skinny kids who exercise and play sports. That said, they both eat school provided lunches, and we all know how unhealthy most public school meals are.
At 12, my daughter's ldl (bad) cholesterol was borderline high. She had been on Singulair 3 years, but was also on small dose of inhaled flovent, or fluticasone is generic name. She's the one who had sudden unexplained weight gain.
I know I'm getting off the subject, but when we repeatedly took her to the pediatrician seeing she looked "puffy" (was actually underweight), and something wasn't right, the flovent leaflet from the pharmacy read "serious side effects, and weight gain was listed first! It also said to tell your doctor if you have a peanut allergy (and my daughter has a severe nut/soy allergies) but the dr. had no idea why it said that. I later researched it and it's something about Soy Lechitin in the drug, told dr & he said nothing to worry about. He actually swithced her to a "new" drug Advair (which has the same drug flovent in one of its components). She was on these 2 drugs for 4 years (is now only inhaling Pulmicort for persistent asthma) but looking back I wish I did not trust doctors, even specialists, that take the life of our children in their hands. Her asthma was controlled, and we're lucky she did not have behavior problems, but our (her parents') guilt and worry will probably last forever (still overweight at 15). Bottom line: I agree that doctors don't know what they are perscribing! And from the award winning practice CHOP Childrens Hospital of Pa.
This registry is a place to share positive or negative side effects of using Singulair. If you directly experienced a side effect while using Singulair, then we encourage you to enter it here. Please note that entries here are the experiences of individual users, and in no way means that you or anyone else will experience the same side effect, since the same medication affects people in different ways. Please always contact your physician.
