I'm a 30 year old male, and I've been on Singulair for eight year...

I'm a 30 year old male, and I've been on Singulair for eight years now to treat chronic asthma. Shortly after I started, there was a noticeable change in my mood and behavior. What I noticed included sadness, thoughts of death, anxiety, and fatigue. I knew that there was something wrong, but just chalked it up to changing life experiences. I was always heavily involved in organized sports (little league through college), but abruptly stopped after college. I thought that the moodiness (or depression) came on because I wasn't as active anymore. Correlation maybe? I don't know. But I do suspect that Singulair is the culprit. I would like to get off for a while, but I literally cannot breathe without it. Does anyone know of any comparable alternatives to Singulair that won't bring on these type of side effects? Thanks all for sharing. Blessings!

I felt that I could not breathe when I first went off singulair, for about the first week, and then it was like I was never on it. I used my albuterol for that week and now I feel like I did when I was on it. I am also on asmanex which is an inhaled steroid. You could try any of the number of inhaled steroids which will act as an inflammatory in the lungs. If you are not working with an allergist, I would start that, too. My son and I have been on shots for about 2 years and they are helping. Controlling that allergens in your home would be helpful as well. I had mood changes on singulair and my 8 year old said he wanted to kill himself several times. You will find that your mood improves when you get off of singulair. Good luck!

try accolate. It came out before singulair and costs more but is for the same thing. I switched back to it in the hopes that it would be more effective....my asthma is completely out of control. Does anyone know about symbicort? I am considering requesting a switch from asmanex.
